IT MAKES SENSE NOW
How do you interpret hoax? I have only just started really listening to it and I can't tell if it is her expressing fears or talking about a lost love or her current love? Even if the song isn't really about her I am still a little confused by it. I LOVE it tho. It's beautiful and the lyrics are so poetic
WHEW okay this is a complex song right here. Especially because this is such a dark and unsettling way to end the album when it comes to the lyrics!
There’s ultimately 3 parts in which I see this song:
1. Her actual fears that never quite leave.
So keep in mind that this album is a lot about storytelling while her experience of who she is is a gentle thread throughout each track! But this song interests me in how it ties back, really, all the way to reputation.
The first verse/chorus in particular I think greatly calls us back to how she has found such a wonderful and true love that she almost can’t believe it. In reputation she gives us the assurance of how she hid her brokenness away from the world but in her tundra of hopelessness, her lover built her a fire, weathered the storm with her, continued to be there even though she is CONVINCED there must be a veiled reason he’d stay or her past issues and consistent flaws.
And I think this song helped her get those fears off of her chest once more by singing about how he would be the one to ruin her if this all turned to be a hoax.
2. This is a closer for the fictional stories.
A sad one, but all of the stories aside from the real ones, do not end well.
Rebekah Harkness’ life was wild but in the end, there’s a lot of tragedy and darkness that plagued her whether it was tabloid related or the different ways her children all suffered (one murdered, one had a child who died by 10, and the third committed suicide after a life time of being in and out of mental instituions)
The love triangle itself is rather sad because though the narrator of Betty hopes to win his love back, Betty herself (whether that’s Harkness as well is a different discussion, we’ll assume she’s a different person!) still ends up being the victim of a “fling.”
So I think their story ending with hoax is rather fitting
3. Folklore passed down from generations teaches us lessons.
A lot of myths and usually the best stories that are passed down from generation to generation, end in a way that sticks with us forever.
They are meant to show us the flaws of humans and what can happen if we fall into the same steps as the characters in the stories.
In a way, this is Taylor ending the album by leaving a mark on us. So we will remember and pass on the folklore to others.
Thanks for sending the ask Megan!!! 💜💜
God Dabi's character is so fucking interesting. He's clearly one track minded on his master plan and he's using anyone and anything in his path to get there. Like his primary reason for going after Toga was to give her the blood vial but everything he said, he meant. Toga calling him a nice person, she meant that. He does care about the League, it's just either 1.) He's trying not to get attached because he recognizes that he can't afford to be tied down by his emotions or 2.) He legitimately doesn't (or refuses) to acknowledge that he does care. God, I'm looking forward to what happens with them after this.
Alright now that we have the UA Traitor reveal the only thing I care about is the League utilizing those notebooks Midoriya has. Especially since they have all the strengths and weaknesses of all the active Pro Heroes and his classmates. Midoriya was gone for a while during the Villain Hunting Arc so his room would've been empty.
Listen I don't know what to do with the information at this time but I just keep thinking back on how weird it was the Dabi wasn't involved in the Overhaul Arc. Not until the Highway Scene. He wasn't there for the initial meeting (neither was Spinner and the argument for Dabi would've made the fight go completely differently are valid) and he never made any comments. He never said anything when Shigaraki came in get Twice and Toga. He never made any comments to Overhaul on the highway, he was just talking to Snatch. And it's weird to me. Dabi not making any comment just feels weird. I could be hanging up on nothing but just putting it out there.
It's hilarious to me at most of the criticism for the recent chapters (and Star and Stripe) like people have genuinely forgotten that this is a shonen series written with heavy influences from western comic books. Everything about Star and Stripe (especially the shit she pulled current chapter with the big ass phantom figure) is so on brand for standard comic books heroes.
Also I know we got My Villain Academia, and I loved every minute of it, but the heroes are supposed to be the ones the audience is rooting for. Yeah it might not be in a more typical way like "Oh the villain got defeated and actually died" and will probably follow the "power of friendship saves the conflict" (considering Midoriya's whole "save everyone" shit) but regardless end of the day no matter how Horikoshi decides to end the series technically the heroes will win. Doesn't mean you have to be happy about it. Doesn't mean you can't be mad that there isn't more Villain POV's (I personally want to see more of their thoughts as well as what the rest of the League is doing).
People just need to remember that the series isn't being specially catered to you. Don't set your standards so high for being able to see your personal wishes that you end up so frustrated with disappointment. I know people want to see just endless panels of curated content on their favorites but it's not worth getting worked up over.
I have extremely high expectations for what's left of Touya's backstory. As complex of a character that Dabi is, he deserves to have these upcoming chapters be amazing.
I want details on how his mind became twisted, I want to know what made "Dabi" because the Touya we saw at 13 was still trying to make his father proud. He was still clinging to that childish nativity that he just had to find that right way to make Endeavor see him.
My bets are on how the media (and his family in the media's presence) reacted to his death. To Touya they might've just moved on, without him. I'm also wondering if Touya tried to go back home at some point, maybe even if it was just for Natsuo.
The pure love I have for Spinner right now is overwhelming. I love that he's getting used as a symbol for those treated unfairly. I love this so so much.
