Hold on to balance yourself, take a step back with the working leg, and curl up trying to envision your heel touching your butt and squeeze with each rep. A side note, you'll also feel your stabilizing leg working (and the entire core). As a matter of fact, since YOU are anchoring yourself (not a door as other systems utilize) you are engaging MANY more stabilizing muscles during every one of these exercises. I call that more bang for your buck, more meat for your potatoes, more wag for your swagg! But really, effective and efficient is what it's all about in every day life, so why not with your workout routine, too? Do 10-15 reps for 3 sets.
