John is so Noah coded it's not even funny

Gale is in town for the summer with his family and John spies him around town, but doesn't work up the courage to talk to him

Comes up to him at the fair and says something stupid like "Pretty thing like you might get lost, why don't I show you around?"

Something something Gale finally allows John to take him to the movies

They dance in the street when no one is watching, realize that they are in love (oh my God)

"If you're a bird I'm a bird" (screams)

Gale invites John to meet his family AS A FRIEND (wink wink nudge nudge), but his family doesn't take to him as well because he is capital p Poor

Doesn't help that Gale's father sees them making out in John's truck...... yikes

Gale's family is enraged, force him to move back to Charleston because "I won't have some queer messing up your future"

Gale is furious at his parents and goes back to John, but John "agrees" with Gale's parents; their relationship will only ruin any chances Gale has at going to college

This makes Gale even sadder, and then angry again and they break up, but Gale can hardly stand the idea of not seeing John again

Flash forward until after the war (very very much like canon except John and Gale do not cross paths), Johns father sells the house to give him enough money to start building the "dream house", aka the one he and Gale dreamt up that one summer

When John goes to Charleston to get paperwork signed, he sees Gale and chases after him

Heart breaks when he sees Gale with a woman (Marge), completely shatters when he sees the ring on her finger

John builds the house and Gale sees the ad in the paper and comes to visit him

"Why are you looking at me like that?" "Just memories"

Obligatory kiss in the rain (shaking at the bars of my enclosure)

"It wasn't over. It still isn't over"

Gale eventually leaves Marge and they live in the big, beautiful house that John built, loving like they were teenagers again
