So I think Emissary is the best Star Trek pilot, not the craziest take but I know some will point out it’s rough edges. And sure, it’s not perfect, but I think it did exactly what it needed to do.

It established the two central pillars of the series.

Baseball besties gifs because they’re cute.

DS9 fundamentally does not work without Benjamin Sisko and Kira Nerys. And Emissary tells us exactly who these two are flawlessly in my opinion.

Sisko’s pain and grief and reluctance and also his deep love for his son and his earnest interest in understanding the Bajorans as a people. His still wrestling with the loss of Jennifer and the beautiful way his first experience with the Prophets conveys that.

Kira’s unstoppable fire, righteous anger, unwillingness to diminish herself for anyone, fierce loyalty to her home, and willingness to at least start to place her trust in others even when she has her doubts.

They’re perfect. The episode nails it. I love them.

I’m sure I yelled about this before but time to be a bitch again.

My least favorite interpretation of Kira Nerys (besides Terrorism McExplosions) is when people infantilize a full grown woman into a helpless little baby gay who didnt know you were allowed to kiss girls until she met Jadzia. In a society where homophobia is literally never depicted to exist. Kira herself is literally the one saying “why cant Jadzia and Lenara be together”.

Just because she grew up under extraordinarily difficult conditions doesn’t mean she’s completely emotionally impotent and cant realize in less than like 26-28 years that she like girls. And yes people can come out at any time in their lives but this specific depiction just feels so babying that it pisses me off.

What if she already liked girls. What if she’s already kissed girls. What if there are SOME aspects of queerness Jadzia can newly introduce her to but Jadzia doesnt need to handhold her through the whole thing. What if shes a fucking adult.

“But how do you explain the boring bfs” bisexual women are allowed to simultaneously date interesting women and boring men. Thinking a womans boyfriend is boring doesnt mean she doesn’t understand her own sexuality. And if you see her as a lesbian than we just didn’t get to see her crack their eggs on screen. These boring guys don’t mean she doesn’t know how to relationships. Jadzia doesnt need to rescue her, they can just… be girlfriends.

And yes obviously I hate comphet Kira as a take too sorry.
