CHOOSE OR DIE ( 2022 )
dir. Toby Meakins
Hoo doggie, two stinkers in a row.
Yesterday’s scary movie was Temple, an ultra-low budget film about three impossibly gorgeous young American persons (hetero couple plus woman’s male BFF) who travel to Japan to photograph and film Shinto and Buddhist temples “for my religious studies class” (seems pretty serious for just one class!), but of course the only actual temple they visit is the one where a monk kidnapped and murdered a bunch of children back in the day. And a kitsune haunts the area? And there’s an abandoned mine nearby? Big twist, the survivor being interviewed by the police has a history of mental illness so They think he killed the other two. And he might have, I couldn’t tell.
[so obscure there isn’t a single solitary gif from it on tumblr or elsewhere on the internet]
Ghost children, decent creature design on the woman/fox hybrid kitsune, good effects for a low budget film, insufferable fuckboy, something about either an abortion or a miscarriage?, cute shiba inu dog.
Not good. Not even bad, just not good.
Today’s scary movie was Curs>r: Choose or Die, which I’m going back and forth on. It’s actually not terrible. It has some moments, and it’s creative. Also features “Are ‘Friends’ Electric?” by Gary Numan and Tubeway Army so it can’t be all bad.
A poor high school dropout who longs to work in computer programming (but, again, high school dropout) and her game-designer BFF (who has a crush on her) discover a green-on-black text adventure game from the ‘80s at an estate sale cleanout type thing, and discover it compels users to harm others by the forced choices it presents (”Break more? or Clean Up? CHOOSE OR DIE”). Turns out there’s a curse. And after four terrible levels, a Boss Battle against Eddie Marsan.
~FUcK *tHe * EiGhtIEs????!!! an indignant Eddie Marsan shouts back at her.
Again, decent effects for a cheaply-made movie. Solid acting, interesting premise/plot though the rules of the movie are not terribly clear so I was frustrated and confused at times. A little digital gore, but a lot of the scares are left to the viewer’s imagination and it pulls that off pretty well.
Ghost children, tough final girl, class struggle, insufferable fuckboy who is also a drug dealer/pimp, syringes, scalpels, broken glass. Seems like a movie that could be rewritten/remade and go from a B- to an A.

Choose or Die (formerly titled CURS>R) is a 2022 British horror thriller film directed by Toby Meakins in his feature directorial debut.
Finally watching Choose or Die 😎
