This is weird but I want to read novels based in modern/present day Japan, just for funsies, but it’s kind of hard to search for? You search “novels set in Japan” gives you a bunch of lists that are aimed towards people who are going to visit Japan (“read these twelve books to get fully immersed before your Japan trip!), and that’s not what I want. And they’re all about past/ancient Japan.
I just want fun novels. I want stuff about people in Japan now, and them having lives in Japan?? Preferably written by someone who is Japanese or at least Japanese-American. Not fucking Memoirs of a Geisha, and not about WWII.
Right now the closest novel that really hit the spot was Pachinko. I want to read Pachinko again without knowing anything about it or remembering that I read it a little while ago. And also that was super deep and sad and poignant and I’m too much of a mess for that. Can I get something lighter? But still good? I may be asking for too much.
