Summary: The night Madam Lan's first son is born, a grieving elder places a curse upon them. Nineteen years later, Madam Lan's second son embarks on a quest to save them all. Kay's comments: The suspense during this story was killing me. And also, this story was so heartbreaking. I felt so much for Mama Lan. The Angst with a Happy Ending really hit home here. Excerpt: The two of them had only been ill once before, when they were very small. Lan Wangji distantly remembers healers fretting over his sniffles, as if he laid upon his deathbed. He remembers being told he wouldn't see his mother that month, and refusing food and medicine until the decision was overturned. His mother held him close through every cough, whispering her love as if she would never have another chance. She trembled with relief when her sons returned healthy. The morning after his collapse in the classroom, Lan Xichen faints in the middle of a council meeting. Lan Wangji sits at his brother’s bedside, out of his depth, wishing his mother sat in his place and thankful she didn’t know. She at least would sleep easy tonight.
