As someone who was a pawn in a messy divorce, seeing people make light of the situation by halfheartedly writing that in so he has an excuse to kiss another boy is a big ol sack of bullshit. Divorces are mentally taxing, very heavy to deal with, and take a lot of life readjustment. Neither of my parents were the same after they split for better or worse.
And don’t even start with the cheating fics. I understand that Curtis not having a character is a lazy excuse to make him a half-assed lover or even a bad person except that it doesn’t because if you’re so supportive of Shiro being happy then you would have enough sense to know he wouldn’t do this. He wouldn’t date people like this. He wouldn’t hurt people like this! And someone as level headed, caring, and calculating as him would not jump into marriage too quickly. He would think, he would consider his options, he would’ve spent months if not years contemplating if he wants to stay with Curtis forever and he decided yes. He considers Curtis someone he feels safe and happy with. From the context of Shiro’s character alone it would be universe shattering levels of impossible for Curtis to be someone he cares so little for that he would cheat on him, with Keith, Lance, or whoever, much less a character that would deserve it.
You essentially have three options that aren’t vomit inducing levels of shitty:
1. Make one or both of them shitty people to push your ship BUT expand the idea. Actually run with the concepts of falling out of love, divorce, and recovering. Go through the mental turmoil, the conversations, and the hurt that both parties would feel if Shiro found love for another while he was with Curtis. Don’t slap these serious emotional roller coasters onto a fic as a not-so-subtle middle finger to this character that did nothing to you, actually write about the damn topic.
2. Don’t mention Curtis at all. It is so easy to just cut out the detail that he marries Shiro in canon. It’s actually too easy. Just write your fic like it didn’t happen. It is a very well received alternative to running with the original ending but not enough to not half ass serious and complicated life events. It’s been 8 months, it’s actually starting to look sad that you all still go out of your way to throw a tantrum about this.
3. Experiment! Try a poly ship you one dimensional sheep! Or just actually get creative in how you would see this character, interests, quirks, personality, just TRY. When Adam existed for even less screen time everyone immediately started to try and give him a personality. He became stern, a brick wall to help ground a younger, more excitable, Shiro in reality. A straight man who took his disaster of a boyfriend in stride and would just calmly drink his tea while watching you perish. This entirely fan constructed personality was not hard to come up with and fun to compare and contrast with other people. So why is Curtis so hard to just try out?
In conclusion, y’all are lacking creatively, weak willed, and need to do better for Shiro’s sake.
