Customized Employment and Discovery Training

The Customized Employment and Discovery training session for Middle Tennessee is now booked. The East and West regions are filling their remaining slots with priority given to providers. We received a lot of interest from outside the provider community, and while we admire the interest, it’s important to note this training is for DIDD providers and Vocational Rehabilitation staff through the Employment First State Leadership Mentoring Program. Customized Employment and Discovery Training

As part of the Employment First State Leadership Mentoring Program, DIDD is hosting another series of training on Customized Employment and Discovery. For 2016, providers will be able to attend the training in their respective regions. The training will be conducted by ODEP Subject Matter Experts Abby Cooper and Rachel Pollock. Initially, the plan was to conduct the training for four days, however that has changed and the training will now be offered for two full days. See the information below:

Middle Tennessee: When: March 21 and March 22 Time: March 21 – Begins promptly at 9:00am and includes a working lunch (boxed lunches provided) and ends at 4:30. March 22 begins promptly at 8:30 and includes a break for lunch and ends at 5:30. Where: Middle Tennessee Regional Office, One Cannon Way Basement, 275 Stewart’s Ferry Pike Nashville, Tennessee

West Tennessee: When: April 18 to April 19 Time: April 18 - Begins promptly at 9:00am and includes a working lunch (boxed lunches provided) and ends at 4:30. April 19 begins promptly at 8:30 and includes a break for lunch and ends at 5:30. Where: SRVS Industries Board room, 3971 Knight Arnold Rd. Memphis, Tennessee (near intersection of Knight Arnold and Getwell)

East Tennessee: When: May 23 to May 24 Time: May 23 - Begins promptly at 9:00am and includes a working lunch (boxed lunches provided) and ends at 4:30. May 24 begins promptly at 8:30 and includes a break for lunch and ends at 5:30. Where: East Tennessee Regional Office – Knoxville Langley Building, 250 W. Summit Hill Drive Knoxville, Tennessee in the Plaza Level Conference room #106 (Note, you have to pay for parking in the garage)

Please note that the training is not mandatory and that Vocational Rehabilitation has not solidified the number of continuing education credits that will apply to the LOA’s. Priority registration will be given to providers that have not previously attended the training and it is recommended that a minimum of two staff from each provider agency attend. Registration is limited.

Customized Employment (CE) and Discovery Training

On April 9, three providers met with ODEP SME Abby Cooper to receive training on CE and Discovery. The three providers that were selected have demonstrated a strong commitment to Discovery and had previously successfully completed the training that was conducted last year by Michael Callahan and Abby Cooper. Providers in attendance were SRVS Industries, PDI Inc. and Greene County Skills. 

These providers will work together for the next six months to build capacity among each other and become experts in CE and Discovery which will eventually allow them to become CE mentors for the state of Tennessee. The goal is to continue building capacity in order to sustain CE and Discovery training in our state. For questions, contact the Employment and Day Service Coordinators or Amy Gonzalez:

How Are You Promoting E1st?

Over the next few weeks, the Employment First blog will take a look at how providers are telling people about their efforts to expand integrated employment.  Up first is Progressive Directions, Inc. in Clarksville.  PDI's Margaret Davis says they are preparing the news releases and newsletters you'd expect, but they're also holding town hall meetings that are open to the public.  People who attend learn more about supported employment and what to expect as people with disabilities move from youth to adulthood.  Margaret says her department has also started a "Job Club" that meets ever week, and they're always looking for new ways to get folks working.

National Conference Presentation

Five Tennessee state officials attended the National Employment First conference on December 2nd at the United States Department of Labor. The purpose of the meeting was to solidify plans for 2015. For the upcoming year, we will continue working on Provider Transformation, Customized Employment and Discovery sustainability, Ticket to Work, and implementing a “train the trainer” model.
