Worth noting for student from low income background - cusu are running a campaign called "class act" to support people from "less traditional backgrounds" if they do feel out of place when they're at Cambridge. Maybe worth looking into?

About What Happened in CUSU

Only one word to describe my feeling: shamed. It's such a shame to have these stupid suckers on our land. They share the same ancestor with us, live in our nation, and are under the protection of our army. Then Boom! They wanna independence! Can't say how fucking ridiculous it is. I don't care what others say but my point is clear: Hongkong is China's. No independence for it. Screw the fuckers. If they hate this country so much, leave. Leave as fast as they can and live fucking anywhere but here. I also didn't expect campus could be the playground of some clowns. See what education in some places is like. The youngsters become haters and call people from the mainland " dogs " . I don't know what they find they are, but honestly iF they are called dogs these clever loyal creatures will feel disgraced. These words have been haunting me for days, and I just need to speak them out. FUCK YOU, CUSU, YOU ARE GROSS. YOU WON'T THRIVE AGAIN SINCE NOW AND YOU ARE NOTHING.

hey! so what are the main arenas for student politics? i guess there's the jcr, the union, and student journalists - (is that just the tab?) is there anything else? xx

So yeah, there’s college JCRs and the Union (which is more debating), and student journalism -- the Tab is one, but there’s also Varsity + The Cambridge Student, which are both more like regular broadsheet newspapers and therefore more likely to publish more serious stuff. CUSU (the Cambridge University Students’ Union) also runs loads of campaigns (the women’s campaign, disabled students campaign, BME campaign) that you can get involved with!

what are the BNOCs known for? can you give any examples? im so curious about this

LOL so BNOCs are known for like, a load of different things. I think last year the #1 BNOC was the Union president -- generally people tend to know members of the Union committee. The CUSU president is always on there, as are people who are really involved in some of the CUSU campaigns (particularly women’s and BME because those tend to be the most active). JCR presidents also feature, as do people who are popular at the ADC!

What's the difference between the student union and the Cambridge union? Xx

The Cambridge Union is basically a debating society that hosts speakers. You have to pay to join, but they’ve got some pretty great people who come to speak, and it’s worth it if you want to get into debating and stuff.

The student union, or CUSU, is a standard student union run by people who’ve recently graduated from Cambridge or are taking a sabbatical year. They’re responsible for representing the students to the university.
