Ever since I learned about LibraryPalooza that’d take place in the school a short walk away, I've had this burning fear that it was all too good to be true. Even as I bought books to get signed, even as I made a mental check of my closet the night before for what to wear (was aiming for red and black—because #lunareverafter!), even as I set alarms, I had this sinking feeling that something would prevent me from going.
I'm glad to say I was wrong—After nearly fifteen years of living and breathing books I finally got to meet an author whose work I have fangirled over for years. It was so crazy to meet Marissa Meyer and realize she’s an actual normal—albeit v v awesome and talented—human like the rest of us (whether she’s a cyborg or not remains to be seen).
I picked up some free ARCs (looks like I'm in a fantasy phase rn because I somehow intentionally bypassed an awesome-looking middle-grade novel about bringing down the patriarchy ... only to look back on that with confusion later on. I make strange choices under pressure) and a li'l badge from a large bunch of (cute!) choices. After a quick lunch + live music from an ADORABLE band, I attended Sandhya Menon' session (where my mind was blown by the little parallels between her story and mine as a teenage girl moving to the States from the Indian subcontinent, the impact of public libraries, and interests in highlighting intersectionality) and Tiffany D. Jackson’s session (after which I immediately mentally added her culture-, friendship- and suspense-filled novels—based on real criminal cases).
I learned so much about writing and publishing today. I'd been a little sad about having to attend alone, but in the end it didn't matter. I loved standing in a long, LONG book-signing line—and realizing everyone else was reading, instead of being on their phones. I loved glimpsing the same giddy excitement I felt on the faces of others. I not only met an author whose work I already loved, but met several more whose work I look forward to love. I'm so grateful towards the people who arranged this event and made sure it was free to the public. I'm absolutely beat—and giddy with happiness.
