who doesn't love a good childhood friendship crew? this is going to be pretty to the point, but still super cute and all that jazz. the town is summerlin (a community suburb of the heart of las vegas), it’s summer in the early 2000s, and a bunch of tired parents are out asking for nothing more than a break from the summer break infused energy of their kids. it's after a "stroke of genius" from one of the parents and a handful of community discussion that work begins on the remodeling of a large but virtually abandoned old building into that of a community center for kids. the objective of the center is not only to give them a trusted and safe place to go throughout the year, but to ... you know, give parents a bit of a break (but the kids didn't really understand that until later in life). the center opens just shy of the finishing of the 2000 - 2001 school year, and it’s a hit right off of the bat. minds are molded, children are happy, and friendships begin to be formed that are either temporary or long-lasting. for a group of twelve of these kids, it’s the latter. all roughly six years old at the time, these twelve kids bonded together in a way that was unique to any of the other friendship circles who frequented the community center. they did everything together and, by the time their first summer at the center had ended and a new school year had began, they began to meet up just as often elsewhere. twelve birthday parties yearly, trick r’ treating together at halloween, christmas parties with cliche secret santa presentings, outings into the center of las vegas to visit museums, carpooling together to school (no matter how cramped and questionably legal the seatbelt situation got). even after they grew older and were less likely to hang around the community center they still hung around each other ... exchanging out their more childlike activities for “age appropriate” ones (like hanging around the mall, loitering outside of gas stations and trying to sneak into r-rated movies). now all in their early twenties, they’re all still close in their own way, but with adulthood brings changes and also challenges. some have stayed within the las vegas area while others have moved away. some attended college locally while others went to other cities around the country, or even studied abroad. some are just as they were growing up while others have drastically changed. all that has really stayed the same is that they love each other and they swear that they’ll always be there for each other whenever they can. or they hope, at least. like said: this is a pretty general plot and it's broad enough that it can be worked at from several different angles depending on the character that you have. there aren't a lot of requirements for it either, just the following: they were all raised in summerlin (and lived in the same general neighborhood), they were in the same year in school, and they’d all be twenty-three or four (either recently turned twenty-four or to turn twenty-four by the end of summer probably). for the sake of being fair and even there’s gonna be a six male / six female ratio for the group, but obviously if anyone wanted to make a trans or nonbinary character we can work that out!!!! — —— —

Imperfect Love
(GR/Momswap AU)
It was hard to believe that they would ever get to this point, but Gideon and Mabel sat in comfortable silence in the empty dining room of Northwest Manor, politely eating their respective meals. The repairs from the Gem mutants and lumberjack ghost incident had long since been completed and the young boy felt that his brave and dashing savior deserved a real reward…not that he’d be willing to say any of that to her face.
“So, how are you enjoying your steak?” Gideon asked sheepishly, his suppressed southern accent inadvertently slipping out.
“It’s great, Gideon,” Mabel sincerely responded. “Don’t take this the wrong way, but I’m glad that you weren’t serving anything like hush puppies.”
Gideon let out a sharp, semi-offended gasp before he playfully said, “What kind of gentleman would I be to serve such cuisine to a lady…even an uncultured one?”
“Don’t ruin this by turning into a jerk, Gideon. You’ve got your own charm when you don’t act like a snob.”
The two suddenly stiffened in shock as a warm blush adorned their faces. Neither one was sure what to do next, but Gideon’s upbringing taught him to never allow an awkward silence in his own home, so he had to make the first move.
“Do you…really see charm in me?”
Mabel only stared in confusion before she responded with, “Of course. When you stop being a Northwest, you are kind of amazing to be around.”
Gideon only stared at the ground in shame, unable to bring himself to see the girl he had wronged so many times in the past.
“I can’t believe that you even think of me that way,” Gideon wistfully said as he struggled to keep his voice steady. “I-I-I’ve done so many horrible, snobbish things to you, your brother, and practically everyone else in your life. I-I-I’m not even like Steven and you still—”
The sensation of Mabel’s calloused hand on his shoulder instantly made him look up and see the sincere expression on her face, reflexively blushing from her unique beauty.
“I can’t believe that you even like hanging around me,” Mabel said as she formed a bittersweet smile. “I mean, compared to you…I’m kind of plain.”
“Why are you saying that, darling?” Gideon asked, instantly clamping his mouth shut when he uttered the last word in his southern accent.
“Hello? You have more money than you’ll ever know what to do with, you practically live in a palace, and…you’re really easy on the eyes,” Mabel pointed out with a bashful blush which the young heir replied to in kind.
“I t-t-think that you’re forgetting how brave, smart, and amazing you are to me,” Gideon stated as the two unconsciously started to hold hands. “Even before the incident, I always appreciated how you never treated me like I was perfect and how you never care what other people think about you because of your interests.”
“That’s a lie Gideon because…I care what you think about me,” Mabel sincerely responded as the two finally gazed at how naturally their fingers were intertwined, a sight that brought a warm smile to both of their faces.
“You know…it’s quite forward for a lady to take a gentleman’s hand like that,” Gideon playfully responded, which made them both break into a healthy fit of laughter.
