Cutie Mark-Less First Impressions
Man, two things that make me absolutely adore this episode. Firstly, I love how the ep briefly, though effectively methinks, presents the motivations of Starlight Glimmer for creating that cult town and her crusade against cutie marks (making the season premiere that much scarier a re-watch 'cause she was that desperate to try and secure friendship), and showing that she was in fact sincere in what she was trying to do with that town. Secondly, I adore the fact that this crisis was solved, rather than through overpowering magic or the series' up-til-now patent Deus Ex Machina-esque ending, through talking down the villain upon coming to an understanding for why she'd committed her actions, and incorporating her into the Friendship cult. (xD)
It's intriguing how her end-goal wasn't to try and overthrow Equestria or remove cutie marks from the entire populous; instead, it was simply a personal vendetta against Twilight Sparkle. She truly was crushed to have her village and the "friends" she'd manufactured taken away from her, and only wanted to ensure Twilight Sparkle would come to know the pain that she suffered in being bereft of true friends.
Seriously, I think this is Diamond Tiara's redemption done far better than what DT got in reality. Where we got no true glimpse that DT had any circumstances to help explain her evilness prior to her redeeming episode, nor does she, in retrospect, have anything in those prior episodes that can act as retroactive hints or clues to any of her prior actions' motivations that can be pinned to "I have to do this because I want to make mom proud," this episode actually allows us to not only see Starlight Glimmer's actions in a different light, but also allows us to be able to link what we know now to what we saw in the season premiere.
Also, reopening a still-healing wound regarding how disappointed I am in <i>The Legend of Korra, THIS is how Kuvira's freaking attempt at redemption should have been handled!!! ALL YOU HAD TO DO BRYKE WAS DROP A FEW FREAKING HINTS THAT HER GOALS WERE ALTRUISTIC, PROVIDE A FEW LINKS BETWEEN HER ACTIONS AND HER ABANDONMENT ISSUES PRIOR TO THE FINALE, AND BACK OFF SOME ON THE NAZI-ISM, AND SHE WOULD HAVE BEEN MUCH BETTER AS A VILLAIN!
The only thing w/ the season premiere that still eludes me as far as having an explanation is why Glimmer kept her mark. Are cutie marks actually linked to a pony's discovered abilities and/or specialties once they're formed? The season premiere appears to suggest this with how de-powered the Mane 6 were upon losing their marks...
One thing that has me raising my brow, unfortunately, is the morale of how critical friendship is to Equestria's well-being. I'm skeptical about whether the friendships of more mundane ponies really matter compared to the Mane 6. It's cool that we got to see all different aftermaths to befall Equestria without the occurance of that fateful Sonic Rainboom, but would anyone here really think that Equestria would be any better-or-worse off if, say, The Great and Powerful Trixie were to have ever gained friends?
Speaking of whom, I like to imagine that the last trip to the what-if present is the result of Trixie having acquired the Alicorn Amulet and ravaging all sorts of hell on the Equestrian landscape upon finding out that the only taco shop in Canterlot was closed down by the Princess for using meat in their tacos. xD
Anywho, I'll need to watch it a couple more times to be able to develop more points to discuss, but overall? I love it.
I'd give this gem an easy 8.5 out of 10, starting out. I'm certain the score will go up as I watch it a couple more times. ^_^
