for fun i decided to design my interpretation of cuttlelings, aka cuttlings. i tried to take as much from irl cuttlefish while following the splatoon design, i hope i did it some justice! also drew the cuttlefish idols which im sure have haunted other cuttling designers lol [zoomed in versions below cut]

Hey I don’t know if maybe I’m being crazy but I’m playing Octo Expansion for the first time and don't these things kinda look like the “cuttlelings” in Hagglefish Market? 

I know the headshape aint exact but the eyes, “mouth” and tentacles of that white one sure do look... familiar.

imo i would like cuttlelings to become a thing because i crave customisation 

also a lot of people wonder “wow theyre jsut gonna throw them out of nowhere and mess up the inkling vs octoling lore” and like. as if we have any proper explanation for the other creatures in this game 

i still dont understand a lot of the lore like how were the octolings chased underground but then shiver and warabi/mashup were also. not underground...? but somehow, somehow, inklings dont know octolings exist

unless im missing something entirely i still think splatoons lore is super duper vague in some aspects and cuttlelings will have no major impact to the lore. hell if the world tour dlc stuff is true then like. whos to say that cuttlelings just dont live in a different part of the world? 

we’ve only been exposed to a section of the earth in splatoons state, whos to say inklings and octolings are just??? live in one specific country and cuttlelings live somewhere else?

Kind of Wakanda-Esque vibes in my head, what’s the agriculture or what are the common foods?

Salmon isn't an uncommon food (hey, even if they are Monstrous Invaders to the Cuttlelings they're still edible), and fish/shellfish are very common. Unlike cuttlefish in real life, Cuttlelings aren't exclusively carnivorous, so they'll also eat some vegetables and breads and such.

Pretty simple and subdued on the outside, with pains taken to camouflage it as much as possible. Once you're inside the community, though, you've got lots of metal and machinery with a retrofuturistic vibe to everything.

Tell us about that Splatoon oc!

Unfortunately they (as an individual) do not yet have much lore. Still working on a name and personality and such. However!

As a Cuttleling, they are a nerd with anxiety. Obviously not all Cuttlelings are like that since it is an entire species, but they do tend that way, especially culturally. They believe in cool tech for its own sake and for the sake of bettering everyone's living conditions. And also fighting off Salmonids when they attack (Salmonids find Cuttlelings to be very tasty).

This particular individual is part of the subset of Cuttlelings that think making a proper first contact with the nearby Inkling community (and therefore revealing their existence as a species) is probably a good idea. Probably. Unfortunately, as with most others who share their perspective, there is a pervasive fear that if things go wrong the Inklings will force all the Cuttlelings underground like they did the Octolings and it'll be all their fault.

(For this reason, all actual Cuttleling contact with Inklings is in the form of spies who watch Inkling technological development to see if anything appears that could be useful to Cuttlelings. The fact that they've been spying on them for a while now only adds more anxiety about first contact.)

(The spies would all be very easily detected if anyone knew Cuttlelings existed because despite being very brave for Cuttlelings, they still appear to Inkling society as weird social recluses. Everyone's just too polite to comment on it because hey, another squid's obvious neurodivergence is none of your business.)
