I need to vent somewhere no-one knows my family...

Goodness but isn't it a singularly lonely feeling to attend the burial of one's father and listen to people speak about him and think: "All these people knew a diferent man from the one I did."

He was a good enough dad, but unlike all these people who seemed to find him so very saintly, I really just can't see what's so admirable about being so afraid of conflict and discord. Because sometimes avoiding conflict leads to giving cover to cruelty, abuse, and in one particular case in his family, abhorrent, bigoted violence.

So yeah. My dear brother can idolise him all he wants, if that's his thing. But I was the daughter he always found too distruptive, headstrong, agressive, not like a girl should be. And while he was never talkative, he did talk about values sometimes, and was disappointed I wasn't just adopting his.

Sorry dad, but I will keep being that person. Unlike you, I will value justice more than harmony. I will never make excuses for the stronger who are mistreating the weaker, but will keep reacting instinctively and intensely, because thats what your self-satisfied passivity made me. I will never care about your sexist "family values". I will speak out even when it terrifies me. I will not care if men will like me less for not being suitably helpless. I will seek to expand my world instead of turning away from it like you did. I will keep fighting my own prejudices instead of justifying them. And I will never, ever hit a child.

Crap daughter? Perhaps.
