Have a CW Nancy at the Overlook Hotel
I tried to do a felt tip sketch of Kennedy McMann as Nancy Drew. 🤷🏻♀️
1x10 || 2x02
I've started a fresh rewatch of CWND leading up to the season 3 premiere, so prepare for my latest thoughts! (I'll be using #cwnd rewatch)
First up is something that probably isn't new to a lot of people, but I am SHOOKETH that I didn't register it any sooner.
In the very first onscreen interaction between Nick and Nancy, we already see the communication breakdown between them:
Nick is here trying to share some background about himself, as he genuinely likes Nancy and craves a more meaningful connection. Nancy, however, prefers to keep her distance here and virtually ignores Nick's attempts to get closer.
This foreshadows the rest of their relationship and what ultimately leads to their split - Nick's eagerness to share, while wholesome and well-intended (personally i am all about that nick come here let me love you), only serves to push Nancy away because, as she states at the end of this scene - "Girls love mystery". Well, Nancy loves mystery, that's for sure.
start watching cw Drew because of you, wasn’t prepared how horny this version of nancy is. Good for her I guess!
Bahahaha, our girl really is. I'm glad you decided to give the show a chance! Hopefully you're having a good time with it so far 💜
I know this is nothing revolutionary, but I want to break it down anyway because I enjoy doing so.
Nancy lusted after 4 people in this episode - Nick, Tamura, Gil, and Ace. Nick is her ex who is dating her best friend. Ace IS her best friend, and those feelings run too deep for her to deal with right now - they’re also a big risk. Tamura is older than her and they have a working relationship, anyway. But who is perfectly available with no strings attached? Gil.
Nancy said that it was nice to just feel desire without having to hold herself back. She explicitly states that she wants to feel sexually liberated - and out of the 4 men she holds some level of attraction to, Gil is the only one she can easily follow that urge with. The only one that comes with no direct complications.
Ok I was that last anon and yes agree! As for the confusion over why she’s into Gil Bobbsey - I agree it’s hard to understand considering George. I feel like it isn’t necessarily the “bad boy” interest but maybe the mysterious guy interest? Nick and Owen were both very nice and tame but there was some mystique there. Also in true Nancy drew fashion I think there’s a little bit of a connection she feels because she’s thinking oh he also has a dead(ish) mother and isn’t emotionally vulnerable just like me. Because I feel like her character is interesting in that she’s so smart but not very emotionally intelligent and I feel like it could be interesting if they show her seeing a worse version of herself in him and thinking she can “solve” his mystery basically and eventually having to reckon with the fact that she misjudged him could be good. Oo or her resonating with him wanting to use the shroud because she did technically kill someone doing it (even tho it’s not the same at all maybe she could like, RELATE to the desperation and not thinking it through and maybe also be a little in denial about what she did idk I’m really spitballing here) overall yes agree with you and it’s weird for me as well but I trust the writers to make it work. And agree about not being too soon with the ace ship. I could see it creating a conflict for them that would prolonge the pre-romance drama and maybe even set them back a little in their closeness while still pining. Like even if Nancy finally realizes she needs to break it off with Gil she could be potentially embarrassed and standoffish and want some space from him
I just reblogged some additions to my post that have similar sentiments to what you’re saying! I see how maybe Gil’s element of mystery is moreso the draw for Nancy rather than him being a ‘bad boy’ - that makes sense to me, but I’ll still need to see her motivations explained and presented onscreen before I can personally buy it. The handling of the Bobbsey relationships is honestly the first time I’ve felt a little disappointed in this show’s execution, but there is plenty of time to elaborate on things and bounce back (as I’m sure the writers will).
I like the idea of Nancy being so connected to Ace that she doesn’t need to feel ashamed with him, but I’m also ALL for dragging out their build-up as long as we reasonably can, so 🤷♀️😂 I agree that I would like to see some sort of conflict, possibly as a result of Nancy/Gil or something else entirely.
The only way I could be happier with season one of CW Nancy Drew is if there was a scene of laying Lucy’s bones to rest in her grave and ghost Lucy making one final appearance (as her old self, not soaking wet) to say goodbye to Nancy and Ryan who stand at her headstone of sea queen crowns.
