CW for medical malpractice This is inspired by a thing that happened to my grandpa, but I was thinking about how it could apply to your Jon too? Chronic pain and anxiety both make it REALLY hard to sleep, so he'd probably be prescribed a really strong sleep medication. Let's say he was hospitalized for a while, and he suddenly begins to just... kinda fade? He has no energy, he can't stay awake, he can't make it through a thought, basically Not Good At All. And Martin and Emma and the rest 1/

Oh friend. This really punched me in the chest when I read it yesterday, and I spent a looooot of time thinking about it last night just because of how genuinely terrifying this is. And I’m really sorry that this happened to your grandpa--though I am so glad that the mistake was found.
In the case that Jon was in the hospital (not sure what for, perhaps a surgery of some kind), I could see him being put on something to help him sleep--though of course, with EDS, it’s important to be careful with how much you take of any drug, but particularly drugs like that. So it probably wouldn’t take too much of it to really start to sedate him.
Anyways, god, I could see Martin getting help when he notices Jon’s altered mental status, and they do a bunch of tests, but not enough to find the source of the problem. Maybe they even get told by a doctor that his cognitive decline is not a good sign--something Martin has seen in real life with his own patients. I think the signs of an accidental overdose could really replicate some of the folks he has seen on their deathbed. And so he was just filled with absolute dread the whole time, fearing (and perhaps knowing) what was to come, but when they deliver the bad news--I think he either gets sick, or passes out.
And then they call Tim and Sasha--who get the kids out of school and come sit with them in the hospital. And it’s just awful awful awful, with everyone sitting by the bedside, Molly taking Emma outside where she has a panic attack, Tim just sitting with Martin as he holds Jon’s hand, both of them weeping. Until it’s time for meds.
It’s time for meds, and Martin takes a look at what they’re giving him while the nurses work on trying to wake him up enough to take them. And he sees the pills--and nearly loses his mind. First with relief--and then with a fury like none of them have ever seen.
And thank god--after he stops taking them, Jon gets gradually more and more aware, and at last, back to his full ability. Martin and Emma have both lost several years off their lives from stress, to be sure, but for now, they’re just beyond grateful to have him back.
