The Letter

L

The pen sticks to the page, dragging a fine indentation between the thin blue rule lines. It leaves no ink, just a tiny black smudge where Tim had first set it down, more residue from the last use than anything new he’d created tonight.

He shakes the pen, several sharp jerks up and down, and narrowly avoids hitting his own shoulder in the process.

He tries again.

Lu

This time, he gets two letters before the pen stops writing. He rattles it back and forth, then rolls the nib across his tongue. Maybe the moisture will help the ink start flowing?

Lucy,

Now, the pen works fine. The ink flows smoothly, carving crisp black lines where his fingers shape the letters of her name.

Tim stops. He tucks the end of the pen between his teeth, gnawing at the plastic while the thoughts gnaw at his brain.

This is the hard part.
