a/n: inspired by my own lip scrub exfoliator thing LOL
“What’re you doing?”
The voice makes you jump, the bathroom having been silent just before, but you smile knowing that all is well. Nothing could possibly happen to you when Seungcheol is home.
“Y’know how it’s been dry lately?” you ask, rubbing the smooth stick in circular motions over your lips once more.
“Yeah…”
“So my lips are kinda going through it. I’m just tryna get rid of all the dead skin and stuff.”
He hums, watching as you pucker your lips in the mirror, a lump forming in his throat. So…does that mean…your lips taste…like whatever flavor that thing is in?
Shaking his head, he tries to steel his nerves. Roommates let alone friends shouldn’t have those kinds of thoughts about other roommates, let alone friends. But he can’t help the little jump his heart does when you glance back in his direction.
“Do you wanna try it?” you ask, holding it out to him.
“W-wha—would that be okay?” He scratches the back of his neck, his eyes trained on the other self care products you have out on the counter. “I don’t wanna intrude…”
“You could never, Cheol,” you tease, coming over to push his shoulder lightly and hand him the lip exfoliator.
He follows you back to the spot at the sink, staring at his reflection in front of him. With you now resuming your routine, he glances at you. How did you do it? Do you just—
He starts swiping it across his mouth, the sugar crystals stuck in the wax. Even if he’s not quite sure on what he’s supposed to be doing, he knows this doesn’t feel right. Squinting at the tube, he turns it around in his hands, trying to find some instructions.
But before he can come up empty handed and sigh, you take it from his fingers. Your hands land on his shoulders and spin him around to face you, his face wide eyed and a faint pink blush starting to color his cheeks.
“Y/n—”
“Uh uh uh,” you coo, gently pushing his jaw closed. “Pout for me?”
He does as you say before you start applying the scrub in the same way you’d done a couple minutes ago. With the sweet crumbs now sitting pretty on his lips and the soft cherry scent of the wax now wafting into his nose, he closes his eyes. Is this what you taste like? Is this what it would be like to kiss you?
He darts his tongue out to taste the balm, instantly met with the saccharine flavor of artificial cherry. But, even though you still haven’t finished, he doesn’t think his mouth has ever felt this soft before. That knowledge certainly doesn’t help his fantasies about kissing you.
“All done!” you exclaim, pulling away to admire your handiwork as his eyes spring open. “You can rinse off the sugar. Whaddya think?”
He turns on the faucet, running water under his fingers and rubbing it against his lips.
“S-soft,” he murmurs.
“Right! Isn’t it nice? I can’t believe I got this for like five dollars. Such a steal.”
But before you can return to the counter and finish your self care regimen, Seungcheol tugs on your hand, turning you to face him. Opening his mouth, he quickly closes it when surprise flashes behind your eyes.
“Oh I forgot!” You rummage through the cabinet before you pull out another balm product. “You can put this on after too.” Taking off the cap, you quickly run it on your lips and hold it out to him. “Just like that. Do you wanna try?”
However his lips are on yours before you can even blink, your body frozen from his warmth being so close to you.
“It’s good,” he whispers, pulling away to rest his forehead against you all too soon.
Exhaling, you try to steady your heart as you place the product on the counter and move your hands to his back with a few pats. “I think you should try that again.”

“Do we have to?” you hear your roommate whine in feigned distress.
“Yes, yes, we do.” You strolled into the living room with a big box, where Vernon was lying on the sofa staring at the ceiling, shifting his gaze onto the box you held before he furrowed his brows, pulling on his face with his hands. “But why?” he sulked, sitting up lightly and fixing his beanie, his legs still extended on the couch as he leaned against the armrest.
“Because,” you roll your eyes, placing the box on the armrest in front of you, the box lightly tapping the soles of Vernon’s feet, “ thanks to someone, we’re hosting Christmas this year.” You lightly pull on his toes, to which he laughs. “In all fairness, Jeonghan and Shua probably rigged the straw pulling,” he whined, giving you the massive saucer eyes he could muster. “You know I didn’t pull Christmas on purpose, right?” he exasperated, leaning over and grasping his hands as if to beg for forgiveness. “I know, Sol,” you chuckle.
“But still, on purpose or not,” you emphasize the word not, “we can’t keep putting off decorating the apartment any longer; Christmas Eve is two days away.” “But that’s still enough time-” “Hansol Vernon Chwe,” you cut him off. “On it, boss,” he smiles sheepishly, looking at you through his long eyelashes before opening the box in front of you. You feel a flush creep across your cheeks. The warmth in your face scorched your skin to the core you couldn’t help but look away shyly.
Vernon always made you blush as of late - not that he noticed anyways; he was always living in his own world, at his own pace. And you liked that about him. You liked him. You liked him from the moment you met him, but you’d die before admitting to it.
“Y/N?”
You hummed in response. You felt Vernon’s familiar presence shake you lightly. “Y/N, you okay?”
“Huh?” you ask in a daze. You weren’t sure when you’d dozed off in your thoughts, and quite frankly, it was embarrassing. “Sorry…” you reply sheepishly.
“It’s okay. I was asking you where I should put this,” he asks, looking at the floor, a light red adorning his face as you recognize the object he is holding up. Mistletoe.
“Oh, that.” you chuckle before plucking it out of his hands- your fingers lightly grazing each other. “I’ll put it up. You’ve done most of the decorating anyway.” You stared in awe as the living room and entryway had already decked out in arrays of tinsel and Christmas lights. You stood up, mistletoe in hand, as you held one of the many impromptu hanging Christmas ornaments Vernon set up like streamers hung in front of you. “I mean, I am the one hosting Christmas. So it’s only fair I do the decorating.” He hadn’t looked at you since he shook you out of your thoughts, god he was so cute. It hurt. “But this is our apartment,” you murmur as you set up the mistletoe under the archway that leads to your kitchen.
Vernon clears his throat before wiping his nose. “Can we possibly..maybe do a last-minute supply run. We ran out of Christmas tree ornaments when I started hanging them up on the ceiling.” he fiddled with his fingers, waiting for you to respond.
You sigh, grabbing your car keys off the kitchen counter. “What else do you need, hm?”
✣ ✣ ✣ ✣ ✣ ✣ ✣ ✣ ✣ ✣ ✣ ✣
Christmas had gone off without a hitch, Christmas Eve, to be more exact- the guys had vacated the apartment by the time Christmas afternoon rolled in. But, of course, watching 12 men leave in different states of drunken disarray was rewarding, in itself, for the chaotic night they provided you with. You sighed, taking in the chaos your apartment was left in. The living room was in shambles, and the kitchen was an endless sea of red cups, alcohol bottles, and dishes. Vernon emerged from the supply closet, trash bag in hand, zoned out, lost in thought as he approached the kitchen entryway.
Vernon wasn’t a man of many words, this you knew. But his face was the most expressive thing in the world - and it usually gave you an idea of his train of thought. I’m never hosting Christmas again, you could picture him thinking. How the fuck am I cleaning all of this up? You could practically hear him shout. Imagining his internal conflict at the moment brought a soft smile to your face. Then, as he turned the corner, your eyes crashed against each other. And everything seemed to slow down for a minute.
From his long eyelashes batting against each other to the light tint that started pooling along the apple of his cheeks. The only normal-paced thing was the sound of your heart beating loudly in your chest. It beat wildly as you maintained eye contact with Vernon. He stared at you intently, determined to say something to you, mouth agape, but no words managed to come out. You saw his gaze flicker upward before clearing his throat.
“Uh, sorry…coming through,” he stuttered as he sidestepped you. The proximity between the two of you made you burn up inside. You felt the blood pooling in your ears, neck, and face- it radiated off you, and the same heat radiating off Vernon only made it worse. “I’m sorry,” you squeaked, leaning against the door frame, the warmth of Vernon’s proximity diminishing as the space between you widened. “You’re all good,” he smiled at you, patting your shoulder as he walked into the kitchen, getting the bag ready to start throwing things away.
You sigh, looking up at the beam over the entryway and finding the mistletoe hanging over the spot you were standing in previously. Was Vernon nervous about the mistletoe? You thought. Is that why he was acting weird? You chuckled.
✣ ✣ ✣ ✣ ✣ ✣ ✣ ✣ ✣ ✣ ✣ ✣
“Mistletoe! Nice!” Jeonghan cheered, noticing the bouquet hanging from the beam. “Is it real?”
“Considering it was stored in a decoration box, I suppose it’s not.” You roll your eyes.
“Fresh bouquets are always better. Just saying,” he pursed his lips.
“Why so?” Vernon inquired, holding his red solo cup and taking small sips of his beverage.
“Well,” Jeonghan stood up and sauntered over to the bouquet, touching the fake berry that dangled off the end of the decoration. “You already know the basic mistletoe kissing rule - anyone standing under the mistletoe is allowed to kiss whoever else is under the mistletoe at the same time. But, traditionally, back in the olden days, when you kissed someone, you had to remove a berry from the bush, and once all the berries were picked, kisses were no longer allowed.”
As if on cue, Seungcheol stopped under the entryway next to Jeonghan. “YOU HAVE TO KISS NOW!” Seokmin shrieked, aggressively clapping his hands at the prospect of the two locking lips.
“Bro, as if!” Seungcheol shouted.
“Actually, you can deny a kiss, so I don’t have to kiss Cheol if I don’t want to.” Jeonghan deadpanned before flicking Seungcheol’s neck. “You can also hug, high five, tap each other’s shoulders, etcetera. So you don’t have to limit yourself to kissing while under the mistletoe, and if you don’t want to kiss, you don’t have to feel forced to.”
✣ ✣ ✣ ✣ ✣ ✣ ✣ ✣ ✣ ✣ ✣ ✣
The lingering tingles from where Vernon patted your shoulder made you smile lightly as you stared at the mistletoe.
‘You don’t have to limit yourself to kissing while under the mistletoe.’
Stupid Jeonghan, you roll your eyes as the male’s words echo in your mind.
You can hear Vernon scuffling around the kitchen, picking up the mess your friends left. The sound of plastic sliding across the ground and a tap on the side of your shoes catch your attention.
A candy cane.
✣ ✣ ✣ ✣ ✣ ✣ ✣ ✣ ✣ ✣ ✣ ✣
“I wanted to try something new this year,” Vernon piped up amongst the noisy apartment.
Everyone ceased the conversations they were in, and Mingyu turned down the music as everyone focused on your roommate.
Vernon pulled out the candy cane box he begged you to buy him at the store a few days ago, holding it shyly. “I have this tradition I used to do with my family growing up, and I wanted to do it with you guys.”
The room erupted in a bunch of coos at his cuteness and request.
You were each handed a candy cane.
“It’s a simple concept, actually,” Vernon surmised. “You receive a candy cane and make a wish upon it. Then, after making your wish, you place the candy cane on the Christmas tree. Pretty simple, right? Oh, and you can’t share your wish with anyone; it’s like a secret. If you can’t keep it a secret, then it won’t come true.”
One by one, candy canes began adorning your small Christmas tree. It was a cute tradition, and you wouldn’t mind continuing it.
What should I wish for? Better yet, what do I want? You asked yourself. You held the candy cane to your lips while pondering what to wish for. You stared at Vernon. He was trying to figure out where to place his candy cane, pouting as Seungkwan pinched his cheeks, his Santa hat hanging cutely on his head.
I wish I’d stop being a coward and act on my slight crush on Vernon.
It was a fool's wish, honestly. You’d probably never act on your feelings, always destined to like your roommate but never wanting to cross the threshold. What in the sitcom is this? You joked.
Seriously, this time. I wish I could act on my feelings without regret.
✣ ✣ ✣ ✣ ✣ ✣ ✣ ✣ ✣ ✣ ✣ ✣
You leaned down and picked up the candy cane, inspecting it to see if the wrapper was broken before standing up.
As soon as you were upright again, you felt your heart stop beating. Two arms engulfed you in a back hug. A kiss was placed on your cheek. The sensation of lips on your skin vanished as quickly as it appeared. And an all too familiar cologne filled your lungs.
You didn’t know how it happened or when he came up behind you, but he just kissed you. Vernon just kissed you.
You raised your hand, touching the cheek he just kissed, as you made eye contact. Vernon gave you a cheesy smile, his Santa hat still on his head as he scratched the back of his head.
He kissed you. Your heartbeat started pounding violently as you kept thinking about his actions.
“Mistletoe,” he chuckled, pointing up at the stem as he slowly tried to retreat into the kitchen.
You don’t know what came over you in that instant, but you reached out and grabbed Vernon’s hand. He stared at you in contemplation, a soft smile slowly adorning his face.
That stupid face.
You loved his face, especially when he smiled at you. He made you feel weightless.
‘I wish I could act on my feelings without regret.’
You smiled back at him, and a light chuckle left your mouth as you pulled him back to you. You grabbed onto the collar of his sweater, leaning in and kissing his lips slowly, but your lips held all the passion and courage you had. Your other hand held his ever so gently as your fingers clasped each other.
You pulled away, slightly embarrassed at your boldness. If you’d told yourself two days ago you’d be kissing your roommate under the mistletoe on Christmas; you would’ve thought you were crazy. “I’m so sorry,” you murmur, too ashamed to look at Vernon after your little stunt.
“I don’t mind…but shouldn’t our first kiss be more memorable?”
You stared at him with wide eyes. Your face can’t keep up with the amount of blood rushing into it today. But all you can do is bite your lip as Vernon leans in, cupping your face as he lightly brushes his lips against yours, and you melt into the kiss. You place your hands on his sides as you deepen your kiss. Your shared giggles and chuckles blended with the Christmas music in the background.

When you woke up in the morning, you were immersed with thoughts of loneliness. Being alone for a long time took its toll on the human body, bringing forth a craving for companionship so vast it was unquenchable.
It would have been alright, you supposed, if you were granted the peace to find companionship in your own endeavours, but alas that wasn’t how life worked. Instead, companionship found its way to you—often presenting itself in a form that simply perpetuated your loneliness further. Alas, what was companionship lest it was a filler for loneliness? A superficial replacement, an ersatz of the necessary feeling aloneness awoke… being loved and having someone were two very different concepts. Sure, people found love and companionship—tethered together and happy as can be. But for others, love wasn’t always synonymous with companionship.
This was why you hired a matchmaker.
You’d heard good things about him, Yoon Jeonghan, from your friends and acquaintances. He had a high success rate, often finding perfect matches on the first date. He was prim and proper, and exuded regality. With his wavy brown hair and ironed blazer, he made it very clear that he prioritized his job and only his job.
Hell, the first time you walked in, he said nothing to you unless it was to take in your preferences, bloodline information, and compatibility requirements. He was professional and authentic to the standards your family had set—prioritizing the compatibility of your four pillars, it was critical you found someone who aligned with you in every way.
It was perhaps the most interesting thing you had ever done. Sure, you enjoyed the single life immensely, but after a while, whether it was from societal or parental pressure as well as your own debilitating loneliness, the hunt for someone to love was underway.
You wanted to hold someone close at night, someone to talk to about anything and to have fun times with. You needed someone who wasn’t afraid of trying new things or deviating from what was considered acceptable and instead prioritizing what was right.
So maybe you had high standards, but if nobody fit the bill, you were fine with that. Because settling for someone just for the sake of calling them yours wasn’t something you would ever do. You weren’t in it for the games, and you weren’t ever going to play them with anybody else.
“This is about you,” he said clinically as he worked with your papers, pushing his lenses up his nose. “Based on what I see here, I see that you prefer masculine-presenting people, as well as those with a rebellious streak.”
You felt warm at this candid expression of your preferences, but nodded nevertheless to let him know he was correct.
At this, he hummed, assessing everything once more before typing furiously into his computer, clicking wildly before nodding his head quickly. “Alright, I’ve scheduled a date for you with a lovely fellow named ‘Jeon Jungkook’, and he seems to be compatible with you in 3 of 4 of your pillars.”
You once again nodded at this, accepting kindly and smiling as he typed something into his keyboard before giving you a smile. This time, it felt genuine.
“Well then, I wish you luck on your first date, Y/n. Since there’s still some time left, would you like to ask me any questions or update your preferences?” He asked kindly, placing your papers neatly into a folder.
You thought about it for a moment, tapping a finger against your chin, before looking at him. His eyes screamed kindness at you, even if the tone of his voice seemed antiseptic—not scaling, but rather unemotional.
So you opted to ask a question. “How’s your day been?” You asked, letting a small smile grave your face at his startled expression.
He quickly composed himself, “I am doing just fine, thank you so much for asking. But this is not about me, and I am committed to using our time to give you the best possible options and aid on finding your future life partner.”
There it was again, that professionalism which you respected and also seemed terribly condescending. You knew this wouldn’t be the last time you met with him, and you wanted to ensure that you remained cordial, friendly even.
But he had this wall up, and perhaps it was just protocol, in order to ensure people didn’t get any ideas. So you let it go. But you couldn’t deny that he was devilishly handsome, and if it was in your fate, you wished you could have matched with him.
Jeon Jungkook was very sweet. He was charismatic, and had so many beautiful facets to his personality. He also had such an attractive mischievousness to him that you adored. But he wasn’t someone you could see yourself loving for forever. He was so friendly and sweet, but there was nothing there, nothing more than just friendship.
He agreed, and it seemed you left on good terms, even if you didn’t find the love that you were craving. You had similar interests, and you enjoyed the same things, but it felt more like camaraderie than romance—which, thankfully, you both seemed to recognize.
Now that you had experienced your first match from Mr.Yoon, you realized that he was very serious about his job, and you were stunned to find out how perfect his matches suited you.
Yet, it was almost too perfect, how everything aligned. You craved something that defied the expectations of something comfortable, something perfect. Perhaps it was your reputation for wanting things outside the confines of normalcy, but you wanted something natural, something that didn’t align with everything you wanted.
And you articulated that to him. He seemed to take in these considerations thoughtfully, and before you knew it, he was already preparing your next match. Whilst he worked, he continued to ask you questions, and you in turn, carefully thought out your responses.
Still, no matter how many dates he set up for you, no matter who he found that suited your preferences, they always seemed to let you down. Your potential matches seemed glorious on paper, like they would suit you so well, but when you went to meet them, the atmosphere always felt so uncomfortable, and you hated that.
So it was to be expected that you spent a lot more time in Mr.Yoon’s office. As one of his more difficult clients, the more matches you rejected, the more determined he became to find you the love of your life.
You started having some serious conversations about what you were looking for, and after a while he became someone you could lean on and talk to. He started opening up a little too, confessing that he had yet to find someone who suited him as well, which is where his determination to help stemmed from.
The clinical, assessing nature of your relationship slowly dwindled the more and more personal you got, as well as the longer your search continued on. Yes, your parents were still impatient, but as they heard about how you went out on dates every night, eventually they began to ease the pressure off of you, actually beginning to divert your attention away from it.
It made you realize that you weren’t doing this for them. It wasn’t about fulfilling their expectations, or finding the perfect match. It wasn’t about being determined or tenacious to love. Your motives weren’t noble like that.
Instead, you just found yourself infatuated with the idea that maybe you had already found love.
When you walked in for yet another appointment with Mr.Yoon, he didn’t even bother sighing at another one of your failed dates.
“What was it this time?” He asked, and you noticed he was sporting a pleasant smile. “Not enough mischief?”
“On the contrary, he seemed too mischievous,” you sighed, slumping into the chair across from him. “I didn’t think I could trust him.”
He hummed, typing something into his computer, “okay, I totally understand. It seems you have exhausted all my resources. You’re the first one who hasn’t made it past the first date that I’ve worked with.”
He raised an eyebrow at you, and you just shrugged, “I don’t know why either. I guess I just have high—“
“No,” he interrupted, holding up a hand. “It’s not a matter of high standards. It’s the fact that you are looking for someone specific.”
You blinked, “no, I don’t think so. I think I will know what I want when I find someone who has the qualities I like and fits what I need.” Like him.
He looked at you warmly over the rims of his glasses, before sighing tiredly, “that makes this entire process a lot more difficult.”
You laughed, “I’m sorry, but if it would help I can give you a deeper rundown on what I’m looking for.”
He perked up, “yes yes, that would be perfect.”
“I’m looking for someone who I can have deep, meaningful conversations with, someone who is comfortable to be around,” you said honestly, pleased at how attentive he was, gesturing for you to continue. “I also think it’d be nice if they wore glasses.”
You feared you were being too obvious, but he seemed to gloss over this detail, typing furiously. “Anything else?”
You shook your head, before looking at him, “Hey, what are you four pillars?”
He stared at you for a long moment, frozen in place. He assessed your face, and he must have found something there he liked, because he sighed before standing up and retrieving something from his filing cabinet.
“I don’t usually share my personal information with clients because it lacks professionalism,” he confessed, sitting back down in front of you. “But I consider you a friend now, so it seems only fair to show you this.”
He took in a deep breath, “I don’t want to make things weird, but both our bloodline and four pillars are a perfect match. Both our earth and water pillars seem to complement one another very nicely. Therefore, technically speaking, out of all the matches I’ve found for you—“ he swallowed. “I’m technically the most compatible with you as you are with me.”
You tried to understand his expression, what it was that he was feeling, but he kept his heart so hidden, that you could only nod, leaning in closer, “I guess that’s only one part of it though. Because…” you hesitated, so he gestured for you to continue, “I think it’s how they make you feel that really decides whether they are someone you want to keep by your side.”
He smiled before looking away, “Right, the thing that was missing from all the people I set you up with—“
“I’ve seemed to find it in you.” You blurted, looking away when you saw his shocked expression.
The silence was thick and uncomfortable and you felt your heart sink as he sighed that familiar sigh of finding an incompatible match.
He took his specs off his face, simply looking at you with a sad expression, as if he understood the gravity of what he was about to say.
“Y/n,” he said softly, kindly, much too kindly to bear. “I understand that we both feel strongly about one another but—“
He leaned in closer and closer, till you were face to face. He gently lifted a finger to tilt your head to the side to whisper something in your ear, “I’m sorry, but because of our professional relationship, I find it difficult to accept your confession.”
Both of you were breathing deeply, but more so you at the prospect of your heart being shattered into a million pieces.
You shivered as you felt his breath gently send tingles along your skin, you felt him grin against your skin, “but when was I ever one to ignore a perfect match?”
You froze as he gently tilted you chin towards him with his thumb and index fingers, “Y/n, I don’t know about you, but I think I found what you were missing.”
“You fucker,” you whispered before you gently brought your face forward to connect your lips to his.
At his gentle ministrations, you knew that this is what you wanted. You wanted to have soft, intimate conversations with him, you wanted to hear everything he had to say, and you wanted him to hold you like this for forever.
He was perfect.
You smiled into the kiss, perhaps bloodlines and pillars had a semblance of truth to them, after all.
Having Jeonghan meet your parents was nothing short of terrifying. But after dating for a few months, and having known one another for even longer than that, you felt it was time.
You often laughed about how the two of you started your relationship, noting how sometimes the most fulfilling love was one that wasn’t pursued, but one that gently fell into one’s arms. It was the love that you found serendipitously.
And as the two of you walked up the stone pathway to your parents’ countryside home in the provinces, your intertwined hands swung with the promise of something to last for a very, very long time.

You see Seungcheol stiffen for a moment, then recognize a sigh in the drop of his shoulders. He strokes a soft hand over the nose of his horse, moves his hand to the side of her face. “Yes,” he says.
The resignation in his voice makes you angrier than you already are, but you only watch as Seungcheol removes the gear off of his horse, as silent as you. The horse snorts in your direction and you take it as a sign to speak again, pulling your evening shawl further over your shoulders to fight the sudden chill of your anxiety. “You didn’t think to tell me?”
Seungcheol shrugs and you burn. “It’s a war,” he says, neutral. “Everyone’s leaving. I figured I wouldn’t have to tell you.”
He reaches for his horse to start undoing the lead’s knot under her chin. You grab his wrist, holding it back. You didn’t even realize you had moved, and by the way Seungcheol stutters his breath you know he wasn’t expecting it either. But he doesn’t move – he could easily overpower you with all the training he does, and yet he lets you grip him, doesn’t fight back. He doesn’t look at you.
“Don’t do that,” you tell him, voice low. “I shouldn’t have to hear it from anyone else. Not if it’s about you.”
Seungcheol’s wrist flexes in your grip as he closes his fist. “It doesn’t matter.”
“What do you mean it doesn’t matter?” You demand, taking your hand away from his wrist. “You –”
You cut yourself off. He won’t look at you.
“Look at me, Seungcheol.” Your voice is shaky. You try to ignore it. You know it’s a war. You know he’ll go – there was never a moment you thought he wouldn’t. He doesn’t have a choice, and even if he did…
Crickets sing. Seungcheol’s horse shifts, then turns away from his hand and farther back into her stall, disappearing from sight. He has no distraction now, no excuse. The lanterns in the stable flicker with the summer breeze. The weather has been so warm recently. You wonder if the rival kingdom is just as warm.
“I can’t,” Seungcheol says, shoulders dropping. “I won’t leave if I see you. I can’t.”
It’s like your heart breaks into a million pieces right then, all the tension of what you thought would happen leaving your body as you go to him. You lean into his back, wrapping your arms around his torso. The dirt shifts underneath your shoes – your maids will be furious at the stains, but it doesn’t matter. Nothing matters except for this.
Seungcheol’s hands fall over yours, and in silence you understand him. He squeezes your fingers and you just feel so lost, so empty. There is nothing to do, nothing that can ease the ache that so deeply resonates through the two of you.
“You come back, you hear me?” You say into his back, breathing in the smell of him. “You have to come back.”
Prince consort, you told him one day. Under peach blossoms in the palace gardens, dressed in the light of last year’s spring. Tensions with the other kingdom were high, but not irreversible. You were one year younger and just as foolish. Seungcheol had smiled and said he needed to be even stronger if he was going to be your prince.
Seungcheol pulls your hand up to his mouth and presses the softest kiss to your fingertips. He doesn’t say anything, and he doesn’t need to. Coming back from a war is not a choice, but a privilege.
You stay holding him for so long your feet feel numb. When he whispers that you should get back, that it’s late and you need rest, it feels normal. It takes you too long to break away from him.
You start to leave, footsteps echoing in the stables as you go. But it’s impossible not to turn back, to catch one last glance. God knows how long it might be before you see him again. If you ever do.
Seungcheol’s eyes are warm when they meet yours, full of something so tender.
For some reason, your feet don’t stop moving until you reach the door of your chambers.

“Are you going to be coming later? I didn’t take months out of my schedule to plan this just for my best friend to skip it! I even made sure we are going to be on the same team for all the activities!”
Y/N sighed, holding their phone to their ear using their shoulder. Their laptop was in front of them, a Google Calendar open to their schedule for the next two weeks: each square was filled with meetings and events.
“I don’t know, Mina. I don’t have a lot of time on my schedule. You said it’s on Saturday? What time?”
“Four! It’s from four to ten! I thought you wrote this down?”
Y/N began typing the information their best friend was giving into a new event. “You know I never actually write things down.”
“Whatever, Y/N. You gotta be there,” Mina sighed tiredly.
“I’m trying, Mina.” Just then, a ding came through from Mina’s end of the phone.
“Oh! I just got an RSVP back!”
“Whose?” Y/N asked.
“Oh my God! You’ll never believe it, Y/N!”
“Just tell me who it was, Mina.”
“It was Hannie! You remember? Yoon Jeonghan?”
That name was not the one Y/N was expecting to hear. A flash of memories went through their head, one specifically standing out, the sound of his voice distinct in the memory.
You’re always going to say that you miss high school, Y/N. College is way more stressful: you have to make your own schedules as well as keeping a job, supporting yourself and doing things on your own. You move away from home and get all this weight on your shoulders. Everything is thrown at you in the matter of months. All I ask of you, darling, is that you do your best now, to get a head start on the best future you could have.
The only thing Y/N thought was being thrown at them at this point in their life was being forced to see Yoon Jeonghan again. It wasn’t that the two didn’t get along - no, it was far from that. It was just that Y/N is, understandably in their words, slightly upset with the man.
As best friends, Y/N supported Jeonghan through everything, and now that he’s socially higher up than them, it hurts a bit; knowing that he basically forgot about them. Of course, Y/N could never be upset with their best friend. The two of them have been through way too much, Y/N just wishes that he tried a bit harder to keep them around. Or maybe Y/N was upset with themselves, that they didn’t try harder to keep Jeonghan around.
The amount of messages that could have been sent or calls that could have been made over the past fifteen years, or even the amount of likes, and retweets depending on the app, that could have been shared between the two of you were forgotten as Jeonghan gained more followers and began leaving home more for his modeling. The idea of seeing him once again hit Y/N like a freight train.
y/n: are you sure yoon jeonghan is going to be there?
Y/N was worried. They somehow managed to take the time off for the reunion, but it was a dreaded task, especially since Mina told them about the appearance Jeonghan would be making. Trying to mentally prepare themselves for seeing the man that forgot about his best friend was hard…how does someone prepare for that?
mina: yes, y/n. i’m sure he’s going to be there! and guess whattttt
y/n: what
mina: he *didn’t* reserve a spot for a plus one
y/n: okay? what does this have to do with me?
mina: you cannot tell me that one of the reasons why you were so heartbroken about hannie not talking to you was because you weren’t in love with the guy
y/n: i wasn’t in love with the guy, he was just my best friend, Mina. i know it’s going to hurt when i see him again.
mina: yeah, yeah. just get your feelings sorted out and make sure not to make a scene at this event that your best friend (aka me, not hannie) has worked so hard on <3
y/n: if all you’re worried about is whether or not i’m going to be there…chill. i’ll be there. just don’t expect me to agree to talk to jeonghan so suddenly. i’ll probably hang with joshua while you’re busy.
mina: joshua hong? since when did you talk to him?
y/n: i…talked to him enough to want to see him after fifteen years.
mina: didn’t he have a thing for you? why do i have distinct memories of hannie trying to fight him?
y/n: nOTHING HAPPENED.
y/n: the end. i’m going to bed now
mina: y/n come back
mina: …y/n?
mina: damn you, y/n.
Knowing that Mina was the one who put all of this together was the only thing that kept Y/N from staying home and opening their laptop once again. Though, that didn’t stop Y/N from having a plethora of excuses they wish they could use in order to stay home.
First, the almost two hour drive to the venue from Y/N’s apartment. Of course, this would mean nothing to Mina as they were carpooling. Second, the lack of formal-enough but also casual-enough clothes to wear. Though, once again this would be no issue for Mina, as she always has something up her sleeve. Lastly, the biggest excuse of them all: Yoon Jeonghan. Was Y/N really ready to see their dreaded best friend after so long? No. Was he still deserving of the best friend title? According to Y/N, yes. According to Mina, no.
That’s just something Mina has to get over.
Mina, being the best friend she was, helped Y/N pick out the perfect outfit: something that proves that they had a good job and did not peak in high school, as well as making sure that same outfit wasn’t too eccentric for such an event. Being the perfect fashion designer she was, Mina did not fail to pick out the best outfit that not only looked amazing on Y/N, but also one that was perfect for all of the activities she and the rest of the reunion board had chosen for the event.
“He’s gonna think you look great, Y/N.”
Y/N picked up the shirt that was laying on the bed closest to them and threw it across the room at Mina. It flew and missed Mina completely. “I am not dressing up for him! I don’t care what he thinks!”
Mina laughed. “Okay well, hurry up and clean up because we have to get going.”
“I didn’t even make the mess, you’re the one who took all my clothes off their hangers,” Y/N frowned. “It’s whatever I’ll just pick up when I get back.”
“I didn’t think you’d get so busy that we would rarely be able to meet, Y/N.”
Y/N looked over to Joshua as he said this, a small smile on their face. “Trust me, I wasn’t expecting it either. And don’t tell Mina this but I’m happy she went through the work to set this up. I’m excited to see everyone again.”
Joshua chuckled a bit. “Have you seen Seungcheol lately?”
“I saw him a couple months ago at this cafe I go to a lot but I haven’t seen him since.” Y/N replied, tapping the transparent plastic cup they were holding.
“I heard he’s been hanging out a lot with,” Joshua paused. “…Nevermind.”
“Jeonghan? That wouldn’t surprise me. They were always close, weren’t they?”
“Heh, yeah. They were. I mean, before uh, he left.”
Y/N looked over at their friend, “You know you can say his name. It’s not like he’s Voldemort or something.”
“I just didn’t want to make you uncomfortable. I mean, having someone you’re that in love with leave so sudden-”
“Why does everyone think I was in love with Jeonghan!”
“Probably because you were,” someone wrapped their arms around Y/N’s shoulders. “Even if you didn’t see it, everyone else did.”
Joshua smiled. “Hey Cheol, we were just talking about you!”
The man, Seungcheol, grinned and blushed a bit. “Hey, Shua. It’s nice to see you.” Seungcheol looked over at Y/N. “By the way, if you want to talk to him, he’s over there with Jimin and Taehyung. Says he was hoping to be able to talk to you tonight.”
*************
He looked exactly like he did in his Instagram post Mina had sent Y/N this morning. His natural hair covered by a yellow bucket hat, and the baggy jacket he was wearing hanging off his shoulders like he was in a photoshoot and not at a high school reunion.
Y/N didn’t dare to step towards the man, scared of any type of confrontation that may have been about fifteen years too late. It was only when they heard Park Jimin call their name from where he stood next to Jeonghan and Taehyung that they dared to make eye contact with any of the three.
Jimin motioned for Y/N to cross the room towards their three classmates, and Y/N had no choice other than to walk towards them (especially since Joshua and Seungcheol were watching this whole encounter from next to Y/N, daring to give them a little push on the back to get them to start walking).
“Hi, Y/N! It’s so nice to see you!” Jimin gave Y/N an eye-smile while Taehyung waved. Jeonghan just stood there, not knowing what to say.
“Hey!” Y/N was breathless. They weren’t sure whether it was because of the lack of space in the room for normal movement or the fear of being this close to Jeonghan.
Y/N looked over to Jeonghan and shot him a quick smile, hoping that it was so fast he wouldn’t have even noticed it.
Sadly he did. Jimin and Taehyung also must have noticed it, as they quickly made basic conversation before they awkwardly excused themselves to go find someone who they refused to name.
That just left Y/N with Jeeonghan.
Jeonghan coughed. “Um. Hey, Y/N.”
“Hey.”
The two stood there for a few seconds in awkward silence.
“Look, I’m really sorry, Y/N,” Jeonghan set the cup he was holding down onto the snack table they stood next to. “I didn’t mean to basically ghost you. I just wasn’t expecting to get so busy so quickly and then…yeah.”
“It’s whatever. I mean, I guess I’m kind of over it? Mina is definitely not but, yeah I just…don’t think it’s that big of a deal? I mean, it's been how long?”
Jeonghan nodded. “Well, I mean, we were best friends and I still lo- like your company just as much as I did then.”
“Thank you for your apology, then. I never really stopped considering you my best friend, you know.”
Jeonghan smiled. “Then I guess it’s time to finally go pull more pranks on Joshua and Seungcheol?”
“If you break anything, Mina will be so pissed at you.”
It didn’t take long for Jeonghan to tell Y/N, as well as Joshua, Seungcheol and Mina that he got a contract closer to home. Of course, he was going to miss all the traveling, but he knew it would be good for Y/N and his friendship that he stayed.
Otherwise, Jeonghan thought, how is he going to get Y/N to finally admit to their feelings for him? He clearly remembered overhearing the conversation Y/N and Seungcheol had the night of the reunion.
“You did like him though, didn’t you?” Seungcheol questioned Y/N as he was filling up their cup. “I mean, everyone could tell back in high school that your friendship wasn’t just a friendship.”
“I mean, yeah. I did like him back in high school but…it’s been years. He’s got more things to worry about now, like his career, rather than worrying about his best friend falling in love with him.” Y/N took a sip out of their freshly refilled cup.
“I bet you anything, that if you walked up to him and told him you were still in love with him, he would drop everything for you. He regrets his decision to leave because of what it did to you guys.”
“Seungcheol, I don’t know. I mean, today is the first time I’ve seen him since graduation…I don’t want to ruin anything else.”
“So you admit to it? That you’re still in love with him?”
Y/N thought for a bit. “Of course. How could I not be?”
