K2J (Canarywave for the other ship)
Canarywave— First Meeting AU— “I think I broke it.”
Sara looked to the man who had just wretched open her car door. She’d been going too fast. That was the given. But it was the other person who had ran the red light. Not her. They had hit her on the left side, but in the back and not the front. She had heard the glass crunch and the metal scrape. She tasted blood. She was pretty sure she had cuts all over her face. She’d bitten her tongue on impact. The seatbelt had kept her mostly firmly in place but if the car had hit her closer to her driverside door she’d be hurt a lot worse. She felt the desire to pass out but did her best to stay awake. She may not have finished her nursing degree but she knew that if she could fight passing out she would... Who knew what would happen as soon as she let her eyes close.
“Ma’am... Can you hear me?”
“I think I broke it...”
“Ma’am?”
“My arm,” she said, looking at the firefighter that’d opened her door, eyes wide with fear. He had such a serious look on his face. Serious and angry. Like he was looking for a fight. “I think I broke it...”
“Wasn’t you. Was the jackass who ran the light...”
“I was speeding,” she murmured. Her eyes were starting to flutter.
“Hey, now, stay awake. At least until we get you to the docs at medical.”
“I...” She blinked away the black spots in front of her eyes. “I’ll try.”
He backed away and she reached out, clutching his arm.
“Don’t leave me!”
“I’ll be right here. Let the EMT’s get you stabilized, all right?”
Sara nodded and soon she was out of the car. She had a collar on her for her neck, just to be safe, and her arm wrapped up tight because they’d confirmed that it was broken. Once on the gurney she frantically looked around for the man. For some reason she just needed him by her side. She wasn’t sure what to call it. Some sort of heroic worship because he’d been the one to open her door? She didn’t know. But as if he knew she was looking for him he was there.
“Hey there, Blondie, everything is looking good. You’re going to be okay.”
“Gotta get her to medical, Rory.”
“I know, Kid,” said Mick to a young man. Sara focused in and saw the name Jackson on his name patch on his shirt. “Take good care of her.”
“Can’t you come with?” asked Sara, tears suddenly in her eyes.
“Not protocol,” he said, and she knew that, but she felt the panic and the tears fell. “Hey, Hey... None of that. Who can I call for you, huh?”
“No one... I... I don’t have anyone...”
“Mick, we gotta go,” said Jackson.
“Just one damn second,” muttered Mick. He looked down at her. Her ID had said Sara. “Look, Sara, I’ll come by in a bit and check on you. Okay?”
“Okay,” she whispered, and then, she closed her eyes and let the blackness take her. She wasn’t sure how long she was out but when she opened them again she was in a dark room. She slowly looked around. She saw the IV drip going into her arm. The BP monitor. Her arm was in a temporary splint until it could be put in a cast and her face hurt like a bitch. When she finished her sweep of the room she stopped when her eyes landed on a large form, still half in his gear, slouched in a chair. She smiled when seeing him and cleared her throat. He woke up with a slight start. “You stayed?”
“Yeah, well, I made a promise didn’t I?”
“It was silly. I was delirious. Concussed.”
“Yeah, well...” He smirked, rising from his chair, his knees and back cracking with the movement. “Wanted to make sure you were good.”
“Thank you...” Sara trailed off, waiting for a name.
“Mick. Mick Rory.”
“Thank you, Mick.”
“Sure there is no one to call?” he asked. “They contacted your sister in Star City. She’ll be here tomorrow. I dunno if you have a roommate or...”
Her groan of despair had him stopping.
“You called my sister?”
“Wasn’t me. Was the Docs.”
“Dammit...”
“Not on good terms?” he asked with a slight smirk.
“Nope. My family hates me. I... I did a lot of shitty things. I left a long time ago.”
“I doubt they hate you. Your sister is coming,” said Mick... Sara bit her bottom lip, worrying it. “Sara... If it were my sister... Well, if I had a sister... I’d want to be there.”
“No siblings?”
“Had a brother. He died in a fire.”
“Oh... I’m sorry.”
“It was a long time ago.”
They stayed in silence for a while. Mick was finding himself getting attached. This girl was alone. Just like him. While her family wasn’t dead like his... She still had no one here for her. Or at least felt like she had no one. Two orphans who happened to meet because some dipshit didn’t want to wait two minutes at a light and be late for a meeting. Well, he never made it to the meeting, and was two doors down with a room full of friends and family all while Sara had been alone. Mick hadn’t liked that one bit... And Amaya had to push him away from that door before he did something stupid.
“Wanna see what’s on TV?” asked Sara. “I’m wide awake now. Until they hit me up with more morphine.”
“Visiting hours will be over soon.” Mick sat back in the chair. “I know a nurse who works here. Amaya. I think she’ll let me stay a little longer. At least until the end of Kimmel.”
“You mean Fallon, right?” argued Sara.
“Hah... Sure... Fallon it is.”
