The Church That Refused to Fall Down 🪨✨

Forget the Leaning Tower of Pisa. If you want real architectural drama, look no further than the Black Mountains of Wales.

This is St. Martin’s Church in Cwmyoy, widely considered the most twisted and crooked church in Britain. Built on a shifting hillside, centuries of slow-moving landslides have warped, tilted, and bent the stone walls into impossible angles. Inside and out, it looks like a optical illusion captured in stone.

Tuesday was a good weather day and I took 5 ladies from the USA on a tour of the #blackmountains We started in Crickhowell and our first stop was #patrishow church. It was then on to #cwmyoy church followed by #llanthonypriory We then climbed via #capelyffin to #wales 's highest road before dropping down into #hayonwye for lunch and shopping. We finished the day with a visit to #llangorselake or returned to Crickhowell via the Sorgwm Pass. An amazing walk in the Black Mountains today with the Vale Ramblers.

We had sunshine, hailstones, wind, snow, but mostly sunshine on a fabulous day at the edge of the Brecon Beacons.

We met in Pandy and headed uphill, climbing up through fields til we joined Offa’s Dyke.  then the weather turned interesting!  The wind was horizontal and the hail turned to stone, but we got to the trig point in good time.

Hatterall Hill sits on the Wales/England border and at it’s highest point of 531m, we had some amazing views over the Beacons.

Del found us a sheltered spot for lunch overlooking the valley towards Cwmyoy.  However, the weather wasn’t done with us so although the sun shone at first, we had a quick hailstone shower.  So we moved down the valley to Cwmyoy and a visit to the crooked church which is held up with buttresses.

We descended down to the floor of the valley, which only meant one thing – we had to go back up!  So Del’s sting in the tail was another climb up to the Coed Cwmyoy.

A gentle wander through the woods and across a few fields got us back to our start at Pandy.

We drove down the road a little and finished off our perfect day with a glass of refreshment at the Skirrid Inn.
