The Artik Beacon: Connecting Smart Devices to their Environments
Brainitch has teamed up with the CyberCode Twins to hack the new Samsung Artik 10 module to develop next-generation public safety prototypes.
Today, we typically see Bluetooth LE beacons in retail stores or in sporting arenas that help bring context to the apps we use. But these beacons are dumb and only transmit a set of 3 numbers that enable specific applications to trigger an action.
The next-generation of beacons will provide 2-way communication over a mesh topology, connecting many devices and applications together with multiple protocols.
Internet access has become a necessity to have in all environments. 3.2 billion people worldwide are now online, representing 43% of the global population. According to Cisco’s new Visual Networking Index report, the number of connected devices in the world will increase from 14.2 billion last year to 24.4 billion in 2019. Traffic from mobile devices will be the fastest-growing segment of Internet traffic. Cisco projects mobile data traffic to increase 11-fold by 2019 and data from mobile and IoT devices will make up 66% of all Internet traffic in 2019, up from 46% in 2014.
With the increase in connected devices and network traffic, it seems logical to offset the reliance on traditional mobile networks with a localized solution. The increase in connected cars and wearables will put a greater strain on metropolitan areas, especially during rush hours. A recent Machana report explains how the connected car will cause mobile network traffic jams for telecom operators.
What if there was a way to offset this network overload?
With the Samsung Artik modules, a municipality could deploy “Artik Beacons” that would provide a WiFi mesh network topology covering the entire city, even underground locations. These beacons would be installed in light poles and throughout buildings, similar to sprinkler systems mandated by building ordinances.
The Bluetooth LE protocol will allow for micro-location services and for serving cached data stored on the onboard flash storage to nearby devices. Most industrial sensors are already operating on the Zigbee protocol, which will allow this next-gen beacon access to rich data without the need of a gateway, providing a complete ambient intelligent environment.
Best part, the Artik modules can communicate and integrate with the SigFox network, which will provide low-powered connected devices an alternative to relying on traditional cell towers. The SigFox network is already deployed in San Francisco and should be testing in Los Angeles soon. Brainitch and the CyberCode Twins are excited to test this “fourth protocol” for Internet connectivity.
With the increase in the number and diversity of devices connecting to a network, there needs to be standards for interoperability between these devices and a more dynamic network management process. Phones, cars, wearables, drones, robots, appliances, sensors, etc. will all rely on an Internet connection. We believe the AllSeen Alliance’s AllJoyn® framework with blockchain technology is how future smart devices will have to operate in order to reduce latency, retain a high quality of services, and keep communications secure.
A connected car driving in a smart city won’t need to rely on GPS or local cell towers for location or communication services. Everything could be localized by the Artik ecosystem and secured on the hardware and software layers by Secure Element, ARM TrustZone technology, and consensus-based blockchain protocols.
Our cities will function like human brains: Neural networks (Artik beacons) will capture sensory information and store it in areas throughout the cortex (cloud). Regularly recalled memories will be cached on the Artik module’s onboard flash storage, while other memories will be encoded and stored for future retrieval in data centers.
With the Samsung Artik module family, Brainitch can quickly prototype next-generation public safety technology, ranging from beacons, wearables, and CCTV cameras.
Be sure to check out Samsung’s blog post featuring Brainitch and the CyberCode Twins unboxing and setting up the Artik 10 module poolside on Brainitch’s rooftop.
We hope you continue to follow our progress as we fearlessly fight to make the world a safer and smarter place.
