We talk a lot about Shane's ED in passing, but not in depth. So strap in bitches I'm doing a deep dive at 4 am. I think most people view eating disorders in general through the lenses of it being caused by body dismorphia. Wanting to control the appearance of one's body. Which is the most commonly portrayed source of an ED.
Shane's ED seems to stem from a need to control some aspect of his body, not his weight, just Any aspect of his body. He doesn't get much of a say in what happens with his body. His body is not really his own it's the NHL's, it's the team's, it's the brands he partners with but it's not *His.* He has to be in control of everything *Has* to be. I think that need for control stems from his anxiety the need to have any and every possibility accounted for and planed for as well as the fear that if he's not perfect he's not doing enough, he's not doing it Right.
I don't think he has Anorexia I think Shane most likely has ARFID (my credentials are I have ARFID) ARFID is less the fear of weight gain, loss, body shape etc. It's instead focused on the lack of motivation to eat, being put off by the sensory impact of foods, lack of motivation to Make food, eat it, the actions of actually putting food in your mouth and chewing and swallowing and the gross feeling of stuff between your teeth (this is me projecting okay leave me alone.) Shane doesn't have the desire to choose clothes or decor I don't think he'd want to go through the process of making food that's he does it because he has to and if he has to do it might as well make it beneficial to his special intrest, Hockey.
He needs to control at least some part of his body and if all that can be in his eyes is what goes into it then he's going to take it. (Which is why him giving up control to Ilya is such a relief for him.) It's someone he knows has His best immediate interests in mind. Not the teams, or the leagues, or a brands interests, Shane's interests. Yes, Yuna does, too, but Yuna is also planning farther ahead than Ilya is and Shane needs someone to focus in on his present needs. Shane's to in his head to do that.
I think that's part of, not the whole reason, why he just went along with the whole tuna melt meal. He's not cooking it. He knows it's a safe food, Ilya does a good job of inadvertently framing it in a way that is easy for Shane to accept. Ilya is making himself food he can make some for Shane. Since someone else is making it for themselves already, Shane can just Accept it.
I might come back to this when it's not 4 AM but we'll see! I'd also like to talk about Ilyas depression as someone with depression But in the meantime I wanna hear your thoughts!
