Lol yeah, I haven't really talked much about it publicly yet. It's an idea I've had for many years now that I've slowly molded into a full story. I recently started developing it more seriously, and as of a few days ago have started making test assets and testing different game functions.

It's a supernatural romance/slice-of-life visual novel with mystery elements.

Give us the Karyonoma naming lore

YAY Okay so the short answer is: They're the Paragon of Decay, a title they have because of a strange illness that's been making them rot from the inside out ever since they were born, along with their tendency to let relationships wither away because they know their days are numbered (whether because of the war or their illness).

That context is needed for the name! So: It's made up of two parts, "Karyon" and "-oma." Karyon is a part of a cell, specifically the part with the DNA. -Oma is a suffix that means tumour or cancer. Put them together, and you have a name saying that illness is a part of them, right down to their DNA, which is quite perfect for a character who has been cursed like this one has been. Karyon also sounds like carrion which relates to decay, so I really like how it sounds!

Thank you for asking! Now for the long answer...

I wanted to incorporate some of their inspirations into the naming process, so I took "Acheron" and "Charon" and tried using them as my root words. Charon is the main link, since the crescents around Karyonoma's eyes were inspired by how some movies portray coins for the dead, needed to pay the ferryman to reach the afterlife, which is by leaving them over the eyes, and Charon's role as the ferryman to the afterlife feels a lot like how decay uplifts life. And, of course, Acheron is the river Charon ferries people over.

I first tried merging these with other words relating to decay (cadaver, mortis, malignant, carrion, and so on) and things immediately surrounding Charon and Acheron (like the other rivers in the underworld, especially Styx, or even Avernus). These first few attempts were. Well they were not very good. The first good step was replacing the "Ch" sounds in my root words with "K" to make things simpler.

When I did start getting names I did like, I would look them up as a precaution, and it'd turn out that the name I had was like. A tech company. Or something. It was usually a tech company

Eventually I got the idea to use a word scrambler instead of just taking syllables from the words in my pool and smushing them together. That way, I could get entirely new stuff! A lot of the letter jumbles were utter nonsense, but some of it was pretty good (I got "cedaavr" at some point, that made me laugh).

It was really early on in the scrambling process that I got "Karyon." I got it by combining "Hyena" and "Akeron" (throwing out the letters that didn't make sense, of course). I REALLY liked it, the spelling felt really good, the fact that it sounded like carrion, and that it incorporated one of my root words. So I looked it up and... It's already an existing word. Dangit! I got disheartened and went back to scrambling.

Nothing I got afterwards sounded NEARLY as good as Karyon, though. So I thought, "I need to make it work." So I started adding random suffixes from other scrambles at first, and they sounded okay but mostly just random. Eventually I found myself looking up a list of suffixes and scrolling through them. And then... I saw it. -Oma. I thought about it for a second. The meaning of both of these, and what putting them together would mean. And I thought, "Oh, that's good."

And here we are! Karyonoma, the Paragon of Decay. I'm really excited to post more about them!
