i think a large part of where fan creators go wrong with wallmark - more specifically wallter - is that they all make the same mistake of assuming that wallter reminiscing his past relationship with mark = wallter is still in love with mark

the reality is that no matter how they actually feel or felt about the relationship, no matter how much they hate their ex partner now, people in real life will reminisce a LOT about past relationships- especially a marriage that lasted for six years. and on TOP of that, wallter and mark have probably known each other for a very long time even before that. its not unrealistic, nor out of character to assume that wallter sometimes misses what he had with mark and remembers an idealized version of those golden days of their relationship, while also absolutely hating mark and not wanting to see his face ever again.

truly, the person who loved mark is gone now. the moment he let himself fall into the influence of gray stuff, which may have stuck him into a point of no return. wallter and mark can NEVER happen again, not by apologizing, or making up, or talking about each other's feelings- it just is not possible unless you completely ignore wallter's gray stuff addiction and pretend it's not killing him. he literally just doesn't care about anyone or anything that isnt a building made of concrete.

its also very important to remember thst just because he may miss his relationship with mark sometimes, that doesnt mean he feels that way ALL the time. its also a very common realistic experience to suddenly be hit with guilt and regret when thinking about happier times in the past that you can never get back- only to later on realize why they ended in the first place, and it turns out you dont actually miss those times all that much.

feelings arent linear and they arent permanent and they are absolutely NOT supposed to be simple to understand. it lacks realism when you think of feelings and emotions purely in a conventional way. theyre adults, it only makes sense that they have complicated adult feelings and cry about stupid things sometimes.

wallmark rambles from earlier

i really like thinking that while wallter like really doesnt care about mark anymore and feels sick and annoyed whenever he sk much as thinks about him he still wears the blue scarf that mark handed down to him because some part of him even if its barely there has an inkling that the gray stuff will make him lose his memories and hes still afraid to forget about mark because he basically represents the time when his life was still ordinary and he was still in control of his own body. during moments of extreme weakness he manages to think that he actually misses him but he just misses the idea of him

still a very small part of him thats still rational does care and i really like imagining that wallter sometimes drives by marks place just to give him huge amounts of financial support anonymously. only occasionally. and probably regrets it like the next day. only to do it again some other time

i ish more people did consider wallter and marks struggles as separate individuals first before considering how that affects their relationship with each other

wallter fucking hates mark and hates thinking about him but still cares about him but also doesnt at all but also reminisces about him because he was an important part of his life but its mostly the idea of him and who wallter used to be instead of him actually wanting to get back with him but he also wears the blue scarf handed down to him by mark because he doesnt want to forget him but also he fantasizes about killing him

but people boil all that down to "wallter secretly still loves mark". im jumping off

man the one thing wallter is absolutely deathly afraid of admitting is that mark was right he usually scoffs at the very idea but probably thinks about it during moments of weakness and he doesnt know how think. he keeps reassuring himself that hes alwaus been the same wallter hes now just a better version of himself but sometimes that resolve breaks in not-very-rare breakdowns

he keeps literally everything from lampert and never tells him anything and lampert doesnt have the heart to question him about it so they still hang out as if nothing ever changed and with him wallter feels everything is normal and fine. like imagine how frustrating and infuriating it is for people to mourn you even though youre still alive and you still feel like yourself or at least thats what you tell yourself
