Don is right - we just don’t know always why periods are wonky.  I mean, in theory yes, science knows what can make periods wonky.  But YOUR period?  I can’t always know that for sure. 

For example, your period could be late because of stress levels, or hormone changes, or you’ve changed the way you exercise, or you’re starting to show symptoms of PCOS, or it’s a symptom of the way your body is reacting to another illness/chronic disease/infection…  We might say, “yeah, it’s probably because of midterms,” but we can’t really know for sure without extensive testing and ruling EVERYTHING ELSE out.  And we’re not going to do that, because that would be painful and exhausting and expensive and a waste of your time.
