UCI Track Cycling World Cup
This 2017/18 series consists of 5 rounds between October and February with each round staged in a different country. This weekend sees The National Cycling Centre in Manchester host the UK round. The series sits just behind the The World Championship and Olympic Games in terms of counting towards world rankings, with National and accredited trade teams taking part.
Over the 3 days, there is a multitude of disciplines for the many big track names to compete in. Athletes present include Kristina Vogel, Katie Archibald, Jon Mould, Max Levy and Joe Truman, but only one male and female Australian competitor.
Friday evening saw the Velodrome about two thirds full with spectators of all ages enjoying a good atmosphere (without the deafening noise and disco lights of the 6 day London event!). Although a smaller venue than London, Manchester normally delivers the more enjoyable and better run experience.
There was some exciting racing with Katie Archibald narrowly missing out on the Omnium Gold Medal to USA’s Jennifer Valente and Jonathan Mould grabbing The Scratch Silver on the Line. Katie went on to get the Gold on Day 2 in The Madison with Elinor Barker, and another Gold in the team pursuit on Day 3, while the men’s team won Team Pursuit Gold on Day two.
World Cup Rounds 3 and 4 take place over the first two weekends in December in Canada and Chile with Round 5 in Belarus the weekend of 19 January. The Track World Championships are scheduled at the end of next February in The Netherlands when the Australians, conspicuous by their absence in Manchester, will no doubt provide further formidable competition. On Day 3, Matthew Glaetzer (Aus) posted the first ever sub 1 minute time for the Kilo at sea level!
