i’d love to know how you developed your kk voice. what the thought process was like, any specific vocal stuff you tried (whether it worked or not), anything you’re willing to share!

i’m trying to develop my own kk voice (and, while i am drawing inspiration from everyone, i want it to be unique haha) and could use some tips especially. i can’t figure out how to emote with it, it just stays kinda monotone.

((OOC: hi! I recorded a small video to show exactly how I do the Karkat Voice™, just wanted to say a couple things first. Most important of all: DO NOT USE YOUR THROAT TO ATTEMPT THE RASP, YOU *WILL* HURT YOURSELF and possibly wreck your throat/singing capabilities long-term. It’s rly not worth it. Study rock/metal vocalists and how they do the rasp SAFELY before trying! And if it hurts or strains, STOP. A Karkat without a rasp is better than a Karkat that can’t sing because of fold/cord damage. Second: this is a technique that I’ve been polishing since 2022, so it’s very tailored to my voice and my style of singing. If it doesn’t work for you, that’s okay. There’s no rule book on how Karkat should sound. Do the things that you feel work for *your* version of the character 💖 anyway, unnecessarily long explanation + jumpscare face reveal below the cut! -ModKat))

((OOC: Once your Karkat voice is locked in and in a more comfortable place for you, you’ll be able to emote much better. I purposefully steered mine into sounding high and slightly nasal and raspy because I wanted to capture that “6.5 sweeps old Karkat in his room losing his mind about his dumbass friends” feel HAHA. Extra tip: the punch to the diaphragm is how I made it work for me, the important thing here is that your diaphragm is engaged and supporting your voice so you can apply the fry vocals over it. I imagine mine as taking a gut punch and hey, it activates it for me so what works works lmao. Relevant song where I use this specific voice almost all the time.
