One  of the really good ones is the one at Porth Penrhyn. The Lôn Las Ogwen route, made up with a short part of Route 5, and predominantly Route 82, of the National Cycling Network, is a  really great one to try out for a nice day out. The  pathway is properly tarred and smooth, almost entirely flat, and easy to manoeuvre on.  The route runs into woodland and parallels a lovely river.

We managed an 8.36 mile round-trip between Porth Penrhyn and just past Tregarth, near Bethesta. I went out with Soul, who very much enjoyed himself, since the walk / ride was smooth and easy on this path. It was beautiful and relaxing, without anything trying to upset my chariot, throw me out of it, bounce me around, and no huge hills to struggle up. It was a really good idea to go there.

The place is difficult to find and virtually in the middle of nowhere on the coast of North Wales. We came off the A55 at a turn-off for a little place called Tal y Bont, Bangor, then made our way here from there.

The place we parked, by the Water Front Marina, was not easy to find, but once we got there it was easygoing. It was a general free space (free as in both fee-free and there for whomever), and although untarred and gravel-covered with some pot-holes, it was still navigable. It also wasn’t an official car park (hence free [for all] space)  so there are also no particular disabled parking spaces, but that’s only because there are none there at all.

The route follows what was an old railway line for the Bethesta slate quarry, moving the product from the mine to the dockyards.

This part of the route which runs between Porth Penrhyn and the village of Glasinfryn, was developed in the 1980’s and is also known as Lôn Bach. The disused narrow gauge railway upon which the path was built, was constructed by the Penrhyn Estate to transport slate from the quarries at Bethesda for export at Porth Penrhyn. 

By today, Lôn Bach is part of Lôn Las Ogwen which continues south on its journey, stretching lazily over the viaduct at Glasinfryn to Tregarth, and past Penrhyn Quarry into the Ffrancon Valley

The old railway line was given a new lease of life and converted into this cycle track and now it is a really great and easy cycle track that all kinds of wheels and feet can use. Along the way, you can also read the plaques and notices that details the history of the railway line and Penrhyn Quarries, which lends it quite an interesting feature that many other walks don’t tend to have.

The view from the path is a lovely one, very typical of the area – farmland, woodland, a gorgeous river, walking paths, bridges, even an old and beautiful Victorian signalling shack still intact, signals and and all.

This space may be a cycle path, but it is not just used by cyclists (and chariots). There were walkers, joggers, dog-walkers… even one ridiculously annoying mini-motocross bike screeching around like a wasp-infested banshee (with a grown man-child on the back of it who should have known better).

The path is long, well-made, has lovely scenery and fresh air. Despite the rather unfortunate weather conditions when we visited, there were still many, many people out there, braving the chilling winds and annoyingly undecided drizzle, as well as almost just as many dogs. Such a thing may sound strange, until you see it for yourself – regardless of the weather or time of year, it is scenic, tranquil, and beautiful. Except for the mini-motocross man-child. But I doubt he’s there all the time.

This is one place that most can comfortably come to enjoy some relaxing time in lovely woodland without having to be concerned about unsuitable terrain, being upended, or struggling up steep hills. This is a place that can be easily be accessed, appreciated and enjoyed by most, and it is definitely recommended.
