Nightberry and Cypressfoot (and Harestrike, from my other comic The Dog Star) for the yearly goblin Discord pride collab. You can check out the whole thing here!
Was there any character you wanted to have given an epilogue to but just didn't do it at the end of the day?
Cypressfoot, for sure. I felt that her story was well enough resolved through Cootstorm's epilogue, but there was still some interesting stuff I could have written with her. It would've been fun to dig into RoseClan's early history one more time.
Once we're past any plot stuff of the comic's ending that it may spoil, would you be willing to post what ideas for Cypressfoot's endgame would have been if her story hadn't been cut short by the endless march of time (read: you made a narratively compelling comic as well as a thematic literature feast)?
She would've stayed in the territory with Cootstorm and Nightberry and died with her - the thematic resonance I believe I would've added there is the last cat with memories of RoseClan dying on that land finally putting their history to rest.
Cypressfoot mentions her father having a large scar from the fire that drove Barrenclan back to its original territory, is she Darksnow's kit? Or was it just a coincidence
Oh man, that actually would have been a phenomenal way to connect the characters, but it was just a coincidence. Cypressfoot's dad is named Elkstripe, I've made a few posts about him before. The reason I never thought of it is because Darksnow is a very old OC of mine and he's always had that scar, I just adapted him into this comic as a fun personal cameo.
Is there a reason why night and cypress didn't have 2 litters? Wouldn't it make sense for them to take turns carrying?
I really can't stress enough how much Nightberry and Cypressfoot did not want kittens, and how much their litter was meant as an appeasement to the rest of BarrenClan. Cypressfoot does love being around kids and was a very good mother, but she was uncomfortable with the idea of carrying, and she would've preferred to moreso help out other cats with their kittens. Nightberry didn't want children, but she loved Cypressfoot more, and Cypress wanted to stay in BarrenClan.
(The reason for them needing kittens being, in BarrenClan same-sex relationships are accepted, but only if the couple produces children ie. through surrogacy, usually with a loner.)
Nightberry came around to being a mom eventually, and she does care about her children. But there has always been a bit of a disconnect between any maternal behavior and herself, and her part of raising them was always more strict and sort of like how you'd train an apprentice. Cypressfoot was much more overtly affectionate with her children, but never took pains to hide why Nightberry had a litter, and she sort of treats everyone in the Clan like her children, rather than giving much more specific attention to her kids.
Yeah, Redstar, Cootstorm, and Blacknose knew they why they were born... why do you think Redstar and Cootstorm were Like That? Why do you think Blacknose was so intense about BarrenClan being a bad environment to raise children and wanting to leave?
hmmm mmmmmhh in Issue 2, as Pinewing goes to check on Cypressfoot and Nightberry, and Nightberry kind of attacks him, he thinks it's 'almost like she thought he was a fox or something'. and now dozens issues later we learn she had visions of the clan being killed, and it makes me wonder if even so far back she knew that a fox will break in and be the thing that kills Cypressfoot.. and as such, she was actually trying to prevent it from happening or buy Cypress more time when mistaking Pinewing for one and snapping at him.. oh man oh dude
Pinewing references it as a coyote, which was a reference to Rainhaze (mr. coyote symbolism) taking Dustfeather out of the den to her death - and yes, Nightberry's response is a reaction to Cypressfoot's eventual death, though she didn't know at the exact time that's how Cypress would die. You'll notice that throughout the story, Pine & Night will often have a subconscious sense of what's going to happen/what has happened before they actually, consciously know what it is.
Yep! :)
