wait are you actually actually catholic? BLOCKED
that’s so fair and i wish you all the best xoxo
and if, by chance, anyone IS curious abt this: i am sort of catholic? this is, in part, a cultural thing — my family is italian & irish and the catholicism there is more cultural than it is religious, in most cases, so it’s pretty ingrained into us even when we make an effort to divorce ourselves from it. my witchcraft practice is heavily rooted in italian folk tradition, which is hugely influenced by catholicism; the most common term used there is ‘stregoneria’ or ‘stregheria,’ depending on who you ask. there’s a whole debate there that i’ll happily get into if prompted.
i am catholic in the sense that i believe in god, but not totally, and i think jesus was pretty cool, but primarily in a political sense, and i think god is way too busy to talk to me directly, so i have to go through saints (his holy administrative assistants) to get an appointment, and that my faith in god / jesus / saints means jack shit if i don’t back it up by doing actual, tangible good to try and make the world a better place. i think that it’s pretty fucking incredible that there was an historical figure who was a political radical preaching the shocking doctrine of love & compassion. i think that the way that the church as an institution has perverted that doctrine of love & compassion is fucking horrifying, and every single pope is my personal enemy. i’m queer & a woman & pretty heretical so i’m fairly certain that the capital-c Church would want to fight me, but they can’t catch me, so pbbbt.
i am mostly catholic in that, like every good catholic, my first act in the afterlife will be challenging jean calvin to a fight to the death.
