Molecular embroidery - the process!
The process of creating the light dependent photosynthesis bag
As with all my molecular embroidery projects, an idea gets suggested to me or I take a specific interest in a biochemical pathway, molecule, or cell structure and choose to turn it into a piece of embroidery! Once I have identified a topic of interest, In this case, light-dependent photosynthesis, I research and sketch the elements I will be embroidering. I use my research and preliminary sketches to produce a design, which I transfer to my material - In this case a canvas tote bag. I now get to choose my colour scheme, this is one of my favourite aspects of the project - allowing you to use colours to slightly differentiate the elements of a protein complex but also create something very visually appealing and vibrant! It then takes me close to six hours to embroider the designs and then another to add the detailing of the phospholipid bilayer and the labels. And then finally, I have a finished bag which I can use to carry the weight of supporting all of earth’s biology (much like the light-dependent photosynthesis pathway) :-)
