Collectible Cuties #3: Compare & Contrast NAGI vs Liroro

Welcome back everyone! Today we will be looking at two popular blind box dolls; one BJD and one MJD and do just as the title says: compare and contrast. There are several different blind box 1/12ths available on the market, and these two brands are not the only options for buyers. They just happen to be the two that I own.

For those who don't know; BJD means "ball jointed doll" and MJD means "mechanical jointed doll". Popular BJD brands are D.O.D., Den of Angels, Dollfie, Dollzone, etc. and popular MJD brands are Nendoroid and Nendoroid dolls, Dream Fairy, EVA, etc.

The main difference between the two is that BJDs are strung with hollowed joints for the elastic to pass through. The elastic is anchored through the hands and feet and stretched through hollow limbs and joints to come to a hook inside the head keeping it taught. MJDs however have no such feature and instead have PVC or ABV plastic joints that have ball and socket, hinge, and swivel movement points. Their hands and feet are detachable without unstringing the doll, and easily swappable.

I wanted to keep as clear of a baseline between these two brands excluding things like measurements. Liroro is made by Simontoys which are BJDs, and NAGI is by CYTOYS which are MJDs. Both are approximately 1/12th scale dolls, are both roughly 5.9 - 6" tall including the head, both are blind boxes, and are both female sculpts with glass eyes. Both dolls also come with a collector card, and a manual for how to use/alter the doll and its measurements. I also picked dolls that have magnets in the head for animal ears to keep it consistent as possible. Liroro Summer Island will be on the left, NAGI Illusory Realm will be on the right.

The first big difference is price. Liroros are more expensive at $24.65 USD while NAGI retails for $19.86 USD (before taxes or shipping). Why the price difference? Lets look closer:

Undressed, NAGI are generally thicker with more defined wider waists, with a waist articulation point that Liroro doesn't have. Breasts are slightly more defined, with more of a thigh gap, and also a more yellowed skintone. The fingers are chunkier and without the hair plates, the head is completely round. Liroros are daintier in the joints and are difficult to lie down flat. You can see the removable plate for the eyes from behind, and the faceplate has been shaved off in a polygonal shape with more defined human ears. Hairpiece wise (not pictured), Liroros are MUCH heavier and their heads have trouble staying up as a result. I also find that their hairpieces tend to want to come apart due to the weight.

Liroro typically comes with 4 pairs of hands, or 7 to 8 hands per doll, NAGI typically only comes with 3 pairs. This makes sense for why Liroro are more expensive as they use more material to make more pieces.

What NAGI lacks in hands, it more than makes up for in outfit pieces. NAGI usually come with underwear and have more complex outfits than Liroro does. Please note that this may not be true with every single line from each brand, but with the multiple I have from each, it seems relatively consistent.

Even the collector cards have differences! NAGIs have a chibi drawing of the character and a QR code on the back, while Liroros have a cute paper doll with clothing stickers for you to dress.

So which is best? Honestly it depends what you find more valuable in a doll. Liroros while more dainty, expensive, and with less articulation points do have more simple outfits, more hands, cuter card art, and a more natural skin-tone. NAGI meanwhile while have more complex outfits, cheaper price point, and are easier to pose with their extra joint and thicker bodies. Honestly? I like them both <3 Tell me who you like the most! A not-so-small update: because I have no self-control, I got carried away with my latest blind box BJD haul again. (my doll army is ever growing, and soon I will overtake the world)

First, I made another attempt at the Puppet Kingdom blinds. I was hoping to get one of the boys, but instead I wound up with Star Wolf and a double of Cat. Whoops. (Next time I should just get the boy dolls pre-opened.)

Next, I've been wanting to get Bonnie the Journey of the Streets for ages. I now own at least four skateboarder dolls, haha. I did have to give the black clothes a makeshift vinegar bath to minimize future staining.

Another series I've been wanting to get was Teennar Campus Idol, since I wanted more mix-and-match street fashion. A keen eye would notice they reuse a lot of pieces from the Student's Club series, which I personally don't mind. I love all the cute details like the leg warmers and metal charms.

Due to all the tiny accessories, the outfits were even fiddlier to put on than usual. Old School Chacha had a headband that kept falling off (strangely the head magnets here were weaker than usual) and a mystery pleather bracelet that came apart. It's kinda funny that even the official Kikagoods unboxing video gave up putting it on.

Lastly we have Nagi Cub Study Tour, which has mechanical joints rather than strung ones. I pretty much fell in love with Pink Cat at first sight and just had to get her, though all the printed-on detail on her outfit was a bit underwhelming. Like Campus Idol, this series also had a nonzero quantity of tiny leather belts.

On an unrelated note, blind box collecting in general has given me a greater appreciation for those little character collectible cards. It's maddening that companies never stick to a standard card size, but they're still fun to flick though. Maybe I should consider getting an album for them or something.

Collectable Cuties #2: NAGI MJD Illusory Realm Series - "Mira"

Hello everyone! Today we are taking a look into a sub-category of the action figure market: blind boxes. Figures, keychains, and plushies are predominantly featured in blind boxes all over the world, but now we are seeing MJD and BJDs making the scene as well in the past few years. NAGI style MJDs are produced by CYTOYS and retail for about $19.86 USD each. They're approximately 5.9 - 6" tall (head included) which is roughly 1/12th scale, and are made of PVC, ABS, Cotton, Fiber, and Polyester. NAGI series tend to be a set of 6 standard dolls with two chase figures for a full set of 8 dolls per series.

The idea of getting a MJD/BJD in a blind box leaves me with mixed feelings. On one hand I'm glad more people are getting into the hobby in a more accessible way: blind boxes being mass produced means they are cheaper in price, and also a good beginner step into getting deeper into BJD/MJD without breaking the bank. On the other, it does bother me that gambling is integrated into the mix as it means if you don't get the doll you want, you will have to spend more money and I worry that younger pursuers of the hobby could develop some real world bad habits.

MJDs are not new. Nendoroids and similar products are massively popular, as is their Nendoroid Doll line. However, seeing original artist works isn't very popular vs character IP driven dolls here where I live. So it is a bit refreshing to see unique designs and characters that have no specific IP attached to them and you could make up whatever personality you wanted with a fully formed doll.

As always, the packaging is very cute, evoking a whimsical wonderland style of characters with the animal ears and teatime set dressing. The character on the box art is "Millie" and is one of the standard figures you can get in this series.

Here are the translated names of all the figures available in this series, and a quote from the promotional imagery on the website. Each has a 1/6 chance with the Hidden Figure having a 1/72 chance and this time there is a color variant of the Hidden Figure which has a whopping 1/188 chance! Much too low in my opinion.

This series has a fun character bio listed on their website, how cute! I wish it came in the box with her on her collector car, would be a fun addition. Mira is a bat, and has very gothic lolita style elements to her design which will see in more detail below.

Here is everything that comes in the box. We get one base doll, additional parts, a flyer that has more information with all the internal measurements of the doll and other useful information of handling, a collector card, and outfit.

Here she is out of the blister pack and plastic. Mira comes with 3 sets of additional hands as seen above: a victory hands set, relaxed open hands, and grip hands. She has a total of 15 points of articulation which is amazing for such a small scale. Her shoulders, hips, hands, feet, elbows, and head are all on swivel joints for full range of movement. Her knees are hinge jointed, and there is swivel joints in her bust and waist. Unfortunately, her twintails are solid and do NOT move.

Her outfit consists of 6 pieces: underwear, socks, a petticoat, dress, shoes, and magnetic pair of ears. Mira's eyes are glass, and have two different pupils, one cross, and one winged heart. She is easy to dress, although I did have some difficulty with her socks going up to her knees. They liked to bunch at her ankles and only with her shoes on could I make them go higher up like promotional photos.

Here she is fully dressed. While I do love her and I'm happy I have her, there are some notable things that do bother me. Her airbrushing of her bangs is colored more red in promotional photos than in person which is unfortunate. Looking at other versions of her in person it seems that this is common for the figure which is disappointing. She also has some loose threads in between the folds of her dress which i am fearful to cut as i don't want to make the pleats unravel. I like the gemstone accents to her collar and she holds a pose well.

One thing I wish she came with is a small stand. She cannot stand on her own due to the weight of her head. Though for $20 USD, I know they would have to increase the price. She's small enough that she sits just fine, but I still would have liked a clear stand or base to display her with. That being said, I think this may be the only NAGI doll I get.

Collectable Cuties #1: Missy Sweet Mourning Laurie Series - "Killing Angel"

A warm winter welcome to everyone coming back here today! Today I plan to cover some of my collection that is marketed towards a more grown-up audience. The "Missy" blind box series is made by CYTOYS and are figures just a bit over 5" tall and are made of PVC and ABS. They retail for about $15.99 USD each, and are typically a set of 6 figures with a 7th chase figure blacked out. Known for their cute macabre aesthetics, glass eyes, and super glossy finish; they're quite popular in many blind box enthusiast circles.

Now I have to admit, I am not a big fan of blind boxes. When I buy things, I want to know what I am buying. So I will often circumvent the gambling aspect and just take a picture and buy one secondhand. Some people call that cheating, I call it getting my bang for my buck. So when you see me talking about blind box series, unless I otherwise state something to the contrary, I just bought the one I wanted online fully knowing what I would get. Please collect responsibly!

Something I love about Missy figures is their packaging. The artwork is always so so cute and reminds me of old internet days on forums. There also seems to be some "yami-kawaii" inspiration and chibi aesthetics. They remind me of similar cute and dark series like Gloomy Bear, Skelanimals, or Living Dead Dolls.

Here she is out of the box with her collector card next to her character quote. I think she's so adorable. Her glossy hair, outfit, and boots contrast her matte skin, and the glass eyes give a sense of melancholy. Her wings and halo are transparent and just as shiny. Some elements of her outfit are also matte such as her knife, her leg bandage, and the red ribbons on her shoe and dress.

The only thing I don't particularly care for is the price. I think that $15.99 USD before taxes is just way too much for their size, and in stores they can be even more expensive with an in-person markup. I know the trend of collectable figures becoming a profit or money making aspect for scalpers has inflated the cost, luxury item aside, but I think $12 would be a fairer price for both the size of the figure and the quality.

All in all, I'm really happy with her! She's a good size, decent price, and very detailed for a collectable figure. Which one of these little ladies is your favorite?
