The morning was going like any other. A long line at the coffee house, loud commuters and the cat that always brushed against his legs was there too. One thing was different though, no flower. When he got to his grandfather’s bookstore the flower shop next door was closed. Weird because every morning since he could remember the day handed him a flower and kept setting up as loud as always. Daichi always found it weird and mildly annoying but he took the flower anyway. Not only had his grandfather asked him to, he believed it would be rude not to. What happens to the other store is not my problem, he told himself once or five times during the day.
Around lunch time he saw the flowers being set up but went back to work. The day went by fine and by closing time he was ready to go home to read. He finished inside then went outside to lock and saw the flower store girl. They always closed at the same thing so that wasn’t a surprise still he thought something was off because she was quiet. Between bringing the chalkboard inside and locking up, he missed her. They always went different ways and guessed tonight wasn’t different- or so he thought.
A soft melody was playing through his earbuds when he saw a familiar figure sitting alone in a park bench at quarter to eleven. He was going to keep walking when he realized flower girl was crying. The only reason he approached was because it was dark and someone could murder her; that was all, he told himself. “Hey-” He hoped his voice didn’t startle her as he stood before her. “What are you doing out here? It’s dark, did something happen?” He was simply a concerned citizen. His question had nothing to do with how cute she was or how much he liked to see her smile, concerned citizen that as all.
