Well, thoughts on episode 4 ?

Ok maybe I should take it from the start. The first scene with the old lady struck a chord with me. The situation she was in was very very serious but she had seen soooooo much shit that a nuclear Armageddon didn’t mean a thing to her. I loved her monologue SO much. I’m not Russian but I hope these guys liked that scene, it felt genuine, like speaking from the soul.

I shouldn’t even mention the dogs and cats. Yeah I knew from the trailer that was coming, yet I couldn’t help getting all teary throughout that scene. Still, somehow it felt very very necessary and those soldiers loved those animals. Perhaps it would be better if the people who love the animals killed them themselves for “the greater good”. At least they weren’t sadists, they were doing their job, and they did it quickly.

And then… we have… the smiiiiiiiile.

I do believe I was given only a nanosecond to process that I had just seen Valery smiling for THE FIRST TIME EVERRR then BAM, Boris’ comment finished me off.

I mean, if there ever was a character reacting like I had just reacted watching a scene, that was Boris.

Boris’ reaction was like… the shippiest thing I’ve ever seen in my life. WHAT are you doing, Boris, and WHO decided to turn “Chernobyl” into fanfiction? 

And then UGH,  that coy boyish grin, the BLUSHING, gee, I swear to god Valery was blushing under those huge-ass ‘80s glasses.

Again, I didn’t have time to process what I was seeing, what was about to happen. In mere nanoseconds Boris, who apparently found Valery’s blushing fucking adorable, GRABBED HIS CHEEKS. Not a mere hug mind you, CHEEKS.

Boris was like… “Are you… smiling? Lemme… lemme see that smile,  Valera, c’mere…”

And sigh, the bear hug that seemed to last for ages.

Boris couldn’t keep his hands off him, he just… couldn’t. 

Later on the happy atmosphere is broken by shitty Soviet politics and inadequate robots. Boris leaves the room ready to explode and Valery… well Valery looks concerned. Of course he would. His boyfriend is pissed.

When Boris lashes out at the government officials people can hear him around the block, and of course Valery lingers outside like a worried wife.

And that cigarette resting listlessly on his lips, I mean… 

In the next scene Valery is giving his usual speech about radioactivity and Boris seems to know all his speeches by heart. They’re like a bickering couple by now.

And oh, look at Boris now being the expert on reactors lol. I guess Valery did a good job. 

Teaching him I mean.

At the end of the episode (and that was the most heartbreaking part as far as Valery was concerned) we have the two contradicting voices of his consciousness represented by Boris and Ulana. Boris wants him to live of course. So he steps in trying to prevent “that voice” in Valery’s head, that dangerous calling telling him to do the right thing. 

And the way Boris utters those words is like he’s telling him “You have your friends, you have me. Don’t do this.”

He wants to protect him at all costs and to him Ulana is now a threat. He’s shielding Valery with his body, glaring and snarling like a lioness protecting her cubs.

And then he pauses when he says “everyone you love”. As if he’s putting himself in his friend’s shoes, imagining what it would be like if the KGB was threatening to kill Valery. His Valery.

I wish this story had a happy ending but it doesn’t.

I just saw LADY BIRD at the theater (only took the german distributor about 10 years to finally release in the hottest spring week ever but, alright) and one girl in the audience was wearing a fucking Greta Gerwig shirt! Nice.
