this movie is what hopes and dreams are made of. james gunn said take five, the entire superman cast and team heard change lives. james gunn thought to himself: what if i could create THE superman irl, pulled out a comic book and summoned david corenswet from the pages.
SPOILERS AHEAD i think so if u havent watched the movie yet like what are you doing go now.
for days now ive been suffering trying to skip and block every superman spoiler from reaching my ears, these tiktok bitches with their zero foreplay and going straight into a recording of the movie in theatres were starting to get to me, i was crashing out a lil. like i got spoiled that superman's parents were evil bc i thought it was a dc skit not straight up spoilers thanks a lot guys i didnt need that.
watching this movie was like being freed from a soulless and depressing cage of despair and doom. with every scene that came on i had to stop myself from screaming and cheering (couldnt stop myself from smiling tho i was shaking in my seat.) i might very well have blacked out from sheer happiness. i could have been robbed on the steps of the theatre itself and i would have simply said "have a nice day!"
the political messages were there, the acting was there, the artistry was there.
i think it was so nice to have politics not be background noise or subtextual, like we all know damn well what the conflict was about. i better not see any bitches complain about realism. when the citizens of Jarhanpur started chanting superman i was right there with them. "american billionaire has ulterior motives against rich-in-oil country, and allies themself with invading country to obtain oil + resources." no really?? im shocked. james gunn heard people say "superman would be republican and support maga" and said "wow thats a batshit fucking stupid take here's superman fucking up a billionaire"
the chemistry between the actors was so peak, like in the interview scene. rachel + david were absolutely delivering in their difference of ideals they were devouring those lines, like it felt so REAL like they absolutely believed what they were saying, they ate the essence of the characters they were portraying before every take. when they hugged in that one scene??!! beautiful. a tear was shed. lowkey thought lois was going in for a kiss but im glad she didnt bc that wasnt what either of them needed in that moment. cooked. when they kiss in the finale?? i get why james gunn cried. he crew. i crew too. we both crode. i think the actors said the interview scene lasts for quite a bit in the movie but honestly it went by fast, like i think its so important to establish what their character and dynamic is like.
nicholas hoult IS my lex luthor no one else will ever do him as good. he rage baited and aura farmed for 2 hours and still got clapped at the end. bless the casting crew for looking at him and going "there is so much hatred in that man. do u think he looks good bald" spoilers: he comes back in superman 2, with superboy in hand and goes "yeah guess what superman, im one of ur baby mommas. guys u didnt believe me before but he actually has a harem." this is true btw, james gunn told me himself. i may have giggled a lil when superman's parents told him to get as many bitches as possible.
mister handsome also looks horrifying.
idk how good of a mr terrific portrayal this movie did, but it made me into a fan.
also the shots in this movie were fantastic idgaf what other people say. every time they panned over the superman logo i cheered and clapped. when superman did his absolute best in every scene to preserve life i cheered and clapped. that green baby did NOT get shaken baby syndrome, not in his care. superman after inspiring hope and kindness in everyone. also i think they cooked with lex as a character, he felt like a damn good threat. "play the clips of his parents they comfort him" and its MARTHA AND JON KENT YES GODDDD. beginning scene when superman flies all the way back to metropolis from the fortress in like 2 seconds YES GODDD. when we find out lex is the ultimate hater by keeping fucking monkeys that type out hate comments?? YES GODD.
i love the costume ngl, my only gripe is that i wish the cape was scooched closer to his neck. like im fine with the collar ik some people dont like it but idk in some shots the cape looks really separate from the rest of the blue suit. like does that make sense?? idk. we all cheered when they gave superman his curly hair. i also really like the superman logo redesign it feels so clean. they made the trunks look good too. i am always of the belief that onesie hero costumes need something to break up solid blocks of colour, like a thick ass belt, some kind of pattern/design, or like. trunks.
anyway this movie made me a superman fan, a dcu fan, and a live action fan. im genuinely mad my theatre doesnt sell those popcorn buckets bc best believe i wouldve got my hands on a daily planet mailbox. im moving to the us just for prime marketing ploys. but also not until america figures it's shit out.
at the end of the movie when the credits rolled, everyone in my theatre cheered and we said superman!! superman!! and then david corenswet himself came into the building and said "whats up guys, im superman!" and flew away. and everyone clapped. true story.
