Chapter 6
Grayson facepalmed and turned around to spare himself the ridiculous spectacle of his siblings fighting despite their 22 years age gap. Meanwhile, Jameson threw me onto my back, cooing mockingly.
« Let it all out. Poor baby… ACH ! »
I had seized his collar to yank him down on the floor. While he was busy collecting himself, I climbed onto his back, wrapped my legs around his neck and used my new handle on him to pull his hair as hard as I could. Jameson yelped in pain and seized my wrist, trying to dislodge me, without much success. He called out to Grayson.
« A little help, maybe ? »
Our older brother didn’t even look up from the issue of The Financial Times that he was reading. « You started it. » he reminded him plainly. « And it’s not my fault that you keep forgetting that you’re not twenty anymore. »
Jameson finally managed to shake me off. I rolled upright and realised that our positions had been reversed. Now, I was standing near the door while he was on the other side of the room. A sense of alarm filled Graysons’s eyes as he realised our brother’s mistake, and he stood in one sharp motion, his voice taking on a warning tone.
« Young lady, if you even think about going through that door… »
I didn’t want to hurt Grayson. I really didn’t. Which was why I preferred to take advantage of Jameson rising to his feet to tackle him, and send the both of them tumbling on their asses, falling in a heap of tangled limbs. While my brothers were busy turning on each other, I yanked the door open and fled in the hallway, running until I reached the flight of stairs leading down to the hotel’s entry. There, I nearly crashed into my sister-in-law, as well as my nephew Harry and my niece Hannah.
Let’s not kill the preschoolers, shall we ?
« Avery, always a pleasure. » I greeted her quickly before jumping over the railing and landing on the floor below.
The kids’ excited shrieking and Avery’s resignedvoice informed me that Gray and Jamie had finally managed to gather their bearings, and had started chasing me.
« Daddy, auntie Skyla went this way ! »
« Snitches end up in ditches, Hannah ! » I clapped back as I grabbed the railing and started swinging.
I caught myself on the railing of the floor below and repeated the operation until I landed on the last floor, among startled jet-setters and baffled employees. I landed on my feet and took the time to plaster a cheeky grin on my face and wave around, like I did at the end of every cheerleading practice. Then, I took off as fast as I could and bursted through the wide revolving door.
I ran at top speed, but my brothers were in surprisingly and frustratingly good shape for middle-aged men, Grayson more so than Jameson but not by far. So I did the only reasonable thing a teenage girl can do when purchased by two grown men, and searched the area until I found a group of young women not much older than me, sunbathing on a terrace. As I brushed past them, I pointed to Jamie and Gray and lamented.
« No conozco a estos hombres, ¡llevan tres manzanas siguiéndome! »
I didn’t dare looking back, for fear it would slow me down, but I could hear a chorus of furious feminine voices calling my brothers out in Spanish, curious and wary questions from the locals around, and my brothers frantically trying to explain themselves and failing lamentably. I smirked and kept running, until I found a gathering of taxis, in the Gran Via. I looked for one with a green light and when I found it, I finally slowed down, took a few seconds to compose myself, and walked up to the driver.
—————————————————-
Back at the airport, I booked my one-way ticket to Ibiza and treated myself to a tasteless tuna sandwich, hidden in the women’s bathroom. It was gross and I was sure that the smell would cling to my clothes, but I wasn’t very confident in the ability of a hoard of Spanish people to hold my brothers back for long, and they would doubtlessly figure out very fast that I was planning to catch a flight to Ibiza. It was, after all, by far the most practical way of going there. Otherwise, I would have been good for six hours of bus and two more of ferry. By the time I would have been done, Jameson and Grayson would’ve had more than enough time to wait for me on the island, probably with a lengthy lecture and a hearty ass-kicking ready.
The woman in the neighbouring stall flushed and I felt what I had already eaten of my sandwich crawl back in my throat.
And with that, dinner is done.
I took a peek at my watch. 05 pm 56. In ten minutes, I would be able to crawl out of my smelly hideout, and get ready for boarding. Right on cue, the airport lady’s voice resonated through the speakers, in the whole building. She spoke first in Spanish, much too fast for me to understand. But when she repeated her message in English, I felt my stomach sink in my heels.
« Attention passagers of the flight FR4899, to Ibiza, with Ryanair. Due to the presence of an untagged luggage in the cargo hold, the flight FR4899, to Ibiza, with Ryanair, will be delayed by twenty minutes. We thank you for your understanding, and apologise for the inconvenience. »
At once, it felt like an invisible hand was grasping my throat, keeping the air away from my head and forbidding me from doing the maths to determine wether or not that was enough time for my brothers to arrive. I curled up in a ball and buried my face in my knees, trying to shield myself from the feeling that the walls of the stall were collapsing on me.
if I got caught, either Nash or Gray would take me with him. I would be placed under surveillance and forced to play happy family with them, like evolving among their children didn’t make me feel like a cuckoo parasitising the nest of pretty, harmless songbirds. A feral, ugly monster kept on a leash.
And I could never tell them that, because they could never understand. They had love, in their life. They were wanted, while only one person had ever wanted me. And she wasn’t a good person by any means, I knew that much because I wasn’t stupid, or not too stupid anyways, but at least we deserved each other.
A sharp pang of my surged through my head, and I realised that I had started pulling my hair again. Slowly, I uncurled my body and raked a hand through the honey brown locks, forcing myself to exhale through my nose. The process was brutally interrupted my a feminine voice calling out my name, outside of the stall.
« Skyla, I know you’re in there. » Avery told the void. « Come out, please. »
Lyrason deserved better and Grayson should've gotten a better romance than shoved bits in a trilogy that was his but just used him for other character's plot/side quests
