The echoing slowly returned. Their howls piercing through the forest. The three wolves didn’t acknowledge it. None of them could even bring themselves to raise their heads.
The echoes grew, getting louder. The howling harmony bouncing off the trees, multiplying. Almost like a pack of wolves was howling back at them, warning them.
Willy’s ears twitched towards the sound before he sat up straight, his hand reaching for Waldo next to him, rapidly tapping his arm to get his attention.
“Get up,” he urged the two younger wolves as he jumped up. “Get up!” He pulled the two on their feet when they did not react fast enough, his eyes darting around the trees, trying to find the source of the howling.
“What was that?” Wuppert snivelled, as he attempted to wipe his tears with his sleeve. His lower lip was still shaking, his voice uneven. New tears were already filling his eyes, spilling down his cheeks.
“The order?” Waldo asked, his eyes widened with fear behind his glasses as he looked up to Willy.
“Stay behind me,” Willy ordered the two. He turned towards Wuppert, roughly wiping away the tears. “You have to get yourself together. Don’t let them see your tears.”
