On This Day In History . . 7 July 1307 . King Edward II's accession to the throne . . ◼ Edward was born in Caernarfon Castle in North Wales on 25 April 1284, less than a year after his father king Edward I had conquered the region, & as a result is sometimes called Edward of Caernarfon. He was the fourth son of Edward I & his first wife, Eleanor of Castile. . Accession; . ◼ Edward I mobilised another army for the Scottish campaign in 1307, which Prince Edward was due to join that summer, but the elderly King had been increasingly unwell and died on 7 July at Burgh by Sands. Edward travelled from London immediately after the news reached him, and on 20 July he was proclaimed king . As king; . ◼ He reigned as King of England from 7 July 1307 to 25 January 1327 . ◼ Edward II had few of the qualities that made a successful medieval king. Edward surrounded himself with favourites (the best known being a Gascon, Piers Gaveston), & the barons, feeling excluded from power, rebelled. Throughout his reign, different baronial groups struggled to gain power & control the King. . ◼ The nobles' ordinances of 1311, which attempted to limit royal control of finance & appointments, were counteracted by Edward. Large debts (many inherited) & the Scots' victory at Bannockburn by Robert the Bruce in 1314 made Edward more unpopular. . ◼ Edward's victory in a civil war (1321-2) & such measures as the 1326 ordinance (a protectionist measure which set up compulsory markets or staples in 14 English, Welsh & Irish towns for the wool trade) did not lead to any compromise between the King a& the nobles. . ◼ Finally, in 1326, Edward's wife, Isabella of France, led an invasion against her husband. In 1327 Edward was made to renounce the throne in favour of his fourteen year old son Edward, (the first time that an anointed king of England had been dethroned since Ethelred in 1013). Edward II was later murdered at Berkeley Castle. . . . #OnThisDayInHistory #ThisDayInHistory #TheYear1307 #d7jul #KingofEngland #EdwardII #EdwardIIofEngland #KingEdwardII #HouseofPlantagenet #Plantagenet #History #History #England #heritage #UK #Monarchy #king #InstaHistory #RoyalHistory #OnThisDay (at England) https://www.instagram.com/p/BznDYnqguL9/?igshid=pymisg9etymm
