Suddenly the screen froze and the texts faded into a picture of him as your phone buzzed from the incoming call. A small smile fell over your lips as you sighed and accepted the call, rolling over with the phone pressed to your ear.

“Hello?”

“I love you.”

A breathy laugh escaped from you at the sudden confession. “I love you too.”

“You know as soon as this hell competition is over I’m coming right to you.” Donghun’s voice was soft and quiet but his words sent warmth across your body. “I’m never going to let you leave the bed.”

“That sounds kinky.” Your lips pressed together tightly at the slip up.

“Could you shut up, I’m trying to be cute here.” Despite the snap of his voice you could still tell he was smiling.

“Sorry,” you giggled but after a moment you found a feeling of longing settle in. “But hurry up and win, or lose, whichever gets you back to me sooner. I miss you.”

It was clear by the way his hands twitched sporadically before him that he was nervous. Every few seconds it seemed his eyes became infatuated with something new, finding that grounding himself with his surroundings was his best bet to avoid the situation at hand.

“Jun?” His name rolled from your pursed lips, a smile suppressed as his attention flickered to you. “I need you to talk to me.”

“What?” He blinked, a blank expression now stealing across his features and jittering hands coming to a pause.

With a small smile slipping itself onto your lips, you removed your hands from your lap and stretched them across the table to hold his. The tips of your fingers had barely grazed over his skin and his palms were unwinding in a welcome for your affection. In seconds his thumbs were gently running over the back of your hands in an action you knew was a way for him to relax, his love of physical touching being one that provided a calm wave to wash over him.

“You’re going to be fine,” you spoke softly despite the fact you were sat alone.

“I’ve never had to do this before, let alone for so many people to see. If I make a single mistake then everything I’ve been working for will all have been for nothing.” Amidst his explanation his voice broke, features cracking from the blank facade and giving you a glimpse of the fear running itself rampant in him.

However, a single giggle made its way into the air between you, your fingers tightening slightly in his grasp as you shook his hands. “Jun, it’s only a school performance.”

He frowned, pushing himself back into his chair and tucking his arms across his chest. “Yeah? And? 9 year olds are heartless.”

The air between the two of you was deathly silent, the tension so thick it would take more than even an ax to cut through it. However, neither of you seemed to pay it any attention as your eyes remained locked on the other, waiting for someone to make the first move.

His jaw was locked and teeth gritting as he held back the words he so desperately wanted to bite you with, but he had already dealt a hateful blow. For what felt like hours he watched your face pass with a flurry of mixed emotions until ultimately settling on a fusion of anger and pain. As much as he wanted to scream and shout, tell you off for the accusations you were throwing at him, his heart was crying for him to reach out and make things right.

“You won’t miss me.” Your voice shattered the deafened air in a snap. Suddenly the world was moving in double time as you snatched your things from his couch and made for the door.

“Where are you going?” His words came out tightly but the furrow of his brows proved his concern.

“Somewhere you’re not,” you huffed, giving him one last parting glare before swinging the door open and leaving.

His feet moved almost instantly, the dread rushing over his shoulders along with a panic he hadn’t realized was making a home in his heart.

“Wait!” His voice scratched as he ran out the door and fumbled down the stairs. “I never meant to hurt you.”

He came to a skidding halt as you abruptly spun to face him with a single hand roughly wiping the tears from your cheeks. “Well, it’s too late for apologies.”

Then you were gone, leaving behind the man who had once been your everything.
