Dorian Pavus and His Opinions

Many people love Dorian to little pieces... Until his opinions on slavery come in. To preface, I don't agree with him. So don't come and attack me over this. This is just my understanding of what he says. Dorian grew up as a noble in Tevinter and his family owned slaves that they treated well, according to him. Dorian has never witnessed abused slaves, he's never seen how Magisters like Danarius treat their slaves. He never had to stop and think about it until he left home and went south. Now, Dorian says that /in the Imperium/ it may be better to be a slave than live in poverty. This can be backed up by Krem saying that his father ended up having to sell himself to support Krem and Krem's mother. Krem's father couldn't afford to support them, his work was awful, so he sold himself. This supports Dorian's claim. It's horrible, but that's the reality of Tevinter. Anyone not a noble is treated like shit. Now, here's where I think people get upset. Dorian doesn't outright condem slavery. He seems to acknowledge how bad it can be, but he is in no position at the time to do anything about it and it is something that he recognizes as normal in the Imperium. He even states that most slaves don't even really seem to think about it, that's how normal it is. He recognizes how bad it can be and even is, but he doesn't condem it and that's where I think a lot of people get upset. He's not like everyone else because he is from a society where atrocities are commonplace. He didn't even think about it much because he didn't have to. In the south, he has time to think about and realize just how horrible his country's state is. He has time to realize that he can't just sit and complain. He has time to realize that he /can/ do something. Dorian's opinions on slavery are not something I agree with, but I understand why that's how he thinks. Asking why he has that opinion of slavery is like asking why Fenris has his opinion of mages. Or why Sten is confused by a woman being a fighter. Or why Zevran likes killing. Fenris was sexually, emotionally, and physically abused by mages. He has known nothing but pain from mages. He has only ever really witnessed horrible things from them. Sten knows nothing but women as priests and Tamasserans. He knows only that women who do become fighters under the Qun are treated as and called men. Zevran grew up most of his life only knowing murder. He was trained to be a killer and he learned to love it because it was what he knew. Dorian's opinions come from a place of ignorance. He knows nothing else for the most part. Again, there are just my thoughts.

The Qun

On the surface, the Qun seems ideal. Everyone has a purpose, everyone knows what they will be for the rest of their lives. Sex is casual, like going to see a healer. It answers a lot of questions for a lot of people. However, it is oppressive. Extremely oppressive. Personal choice is stripped from it's followers. Their ability to choose their own path is non-existent. If you're a woman, you become a priest or Tamaasran. You cannot choose anything else. If you do not fit that role, but in fact fit the role of a man, you are forced to live as a man and called a man. The Qun's societal roles are based heavily on gender stereotypes. The Qun's roles are based on skill as well, but please tell me, when have you ever only been good at one thing? Sten is very confused to see someone who sounds like a woman and looks like a woman fighting. He is confused as to why a woman wants to choose the role of a man. Sten is a warrior, as all men under the Qun are meant to be in some way. Sten struggles with the notion of choice, almost refusing to believe people would want to choose. Sten is so indoctrinated that he panics so much over a lost weapon that his anxiety results in murder. The weapon that still identifies him as Qunari and not Tal-Vashoth means so much to him that he's willing to cross Fereldan several times to find it. Sten fears what would happen to him without that weapon. Bull talking about the Qun is not a good example of Qunari life. He is Ben-Hassrath, he lived as an undercover Tal-Vashoth for years in Orlais because he couldn't think of a reason to continue doing his original job in Seheron. He refused to turn his back on the Qun, so he turned himself into the re-educators. Let me say that again. /He turned himself in to the re-educators, who torture people into re-learning the Qun, or kill those who don't break/. Bull spent more time with people outside the Qun than most other Qunari. He developed a personality and affection for others. Bull doubts the Qun, despite wanting desperately to follow it for purpose. He's happier if he's Tal-Vashoth. He admits the Qun has issues and he's questioning it, constantly struggling with himself. The Arishok is a prime example of how fucked up the Qun is. A man who thinks living outside the Qun is abhorrent. A man who believes the Qun solves all problems. A man who is more concerned about whether or not a Saarebas kept to the Qun rather than if he died or not. A man who advocates for a "deny and die" philosophy. A man who believes that glory is assured under the Qun. The Qunari tie up mages, bind them, make them mute, treat them as animals. The Qunari treat their own kind as savages and animals if they deny the Qun or leave it. The Qunari murder dissenters. The Qun is not ideal by any means. Its a cruel, collectivist ideology. Its members know very little of the Qun itself. Its members are blind to reality, refusing to accept that people are not mindless sheep that play follow the leader. They loathe individuality. The Qun has selective breeding for ideal traits, like Tevinter. It chooses two people with ideal traits and makes them produce a child, which is then taken by the Tamaasrans to be raised. The Qunari do not have relationships. The Qun is oppressive and strips it's members of all freedoms they may have had otherwise.
