YES you should listen to rap. Yes you probably have racist bias against the genre. Yes it makes you look dumb to invent reasons why you can’t listen to a genre invented by black Americans. Yeah it makes you look dumber to try and classify kpop or parody music as real rap.

Just a month ago I promised to take a new-rap sabbatical but the Flint & Detroit rap of 2020 was so exciting that it’s hard to say goodbye. So I thought I’d tap in momentarily and of course that led to a week-long dive which turned up plenty of gems. The martorialist commentators say Rio has a low batting average but my ears disagree. The Yung OG is all over this playlist but his best song so far this year is “New Blender” by Kentucky rapper HBlocc Duke, who definitely got his money’s worth. Rio picks up 1/2 way through a solid 3/5 song and turns it into a 4.5 banger, sinking into the pocket more and more as he gets deeper into his 32 bar verse. He’s feeling himself so hard by the end that he’s DM’ing Megan the Stallion. Maybe he should rock over more slow beats! His fans are so amped that they cropped his verse and posted solo versions that combined have more views than the official. Shiit I gave into the act and chose the “Lemme Learn You Something” crop over the official version which on second thought also bangs but my decision is made.
Grand Rapids’ finest AK Bandamont gets in on the action with “How It Go”, his best song yet. You may think ripping youtubes to mp3′s is foolish but AK in particular is known for deleting tracks months later so if you’re downloading you have collector’s items. Another exclusive is Babyface Ray’s “Lynch Em” which is better than anything on his recent EP and was pulled 2 days ago. Who knows how many others songs won’t exist later this year? If you like it, rip it and it will live forever.

Found myself listening to a lot of SOB x RBE at the tail-end of 2020, and though there might be times when Yhung T.O outshines his (former?) groupmates with his meandering hooks, DaBoii always hits the hardest with his raps. He delivers them in angry bursts: flurries of syllables landing on beat and each line laced with venom. Meanwhile the tone of his verses ranges from righteous indignation to gleeful hatred. Sometimes he’s paranoid and fatalistic (‘Ridin’, ‘Long Run’, ‘Right Hour’) other times brazen and fearless (‘Paramedic’, ‘When U See Me’) and sometimes he’s all of those things at once (‘Strapped’). But he seems to rap best on tracks like ‘Sum It Up’ and ‘Onna Gang’ when he embraces his role of pantomime villain for what it is: just a misanthrope here to sound out his nastiest thoughts.
