Differences Between Hakka Dialects - Part 2
Going to try to get this blog going again. These past couple of times I went back to China, I've noticed more differences between my mom's dialect of Hakka and my dad's. In the past, I've blogged about these differences, though I called my mom's dialect a "Guangzhou" dialect. I now know that there are different Hakka dialects even within Guangzhou, and even just within my mom's extended family.
Word Dabu Mom's Dialect 八 bet baat 去 kee see 香 kiong song 仔 zai zeh 國 gwet get 老 lou lao
And there are some words that are entirely different.
English Word Dabu Mom's Dialect us 𫣆/𫣆兜 (en/en deu) 𠊎兜 (ngai deu) scared 驚 (giang) 恐 (kong*) teacher 先生(sin sang) 老師(lao si)
Some differences between my mom's 鄉下**(village) dialect and her cousins' dialect from Guangzhou city.
Word Village Dialect City Dialect 𠊎兜 ngai deu nga di 你兜 ngi deu ngeh di cockroach (wong cat) (gat zat***)
*This character's pronunciation is different from all the pronunciations listed in the MOE Dictionary of Taiwan Hakka, so I'm not sure if this is the correct character. Then again, my mom is not from Taiwan!
**In Mandarin, this word can be interpreted as derogatory since it implies that villages are "below" or "at the bottom". My mom and other villagers sometimes use this word to describe how things are in their village (vs. the city).
***Likely Cantonese, as my mom's cousins spoke to her and her siblings partly in Hakka and partly in Cantonese.
