Children gather at a memorial to Hector Pieterson, who was killed at age 13 in Soweto protests June 16, 1976.
Today is the International Day of the African Child, a day to honor children’s rights. Its roots are in tragedy, going back to the killing of at least 23 children in Soweto, South Africa, on this date in 1976. We mark this occasion by listening to children’s voices throughout Africa. This year, the Day of the African Child’s theme is ending early and forced marriages in Africa, which is home to 15 of the top 20 countries with the highest rates of child marriage.
“We young girls want to be in a school,” said one girl participating in a march today in Soweto. “That is where we belong — not to marriage.” Read more.
