Y/N has had different encounters throughout the whole week.
First, she thought that Billy was Gabriel and they were similar in a way that Y/N couldn’t even explain it. Their car was the same, their hair was the same, the way they behaved and talked was the same.
Still, Y/N tried to differentiate the two of them the best she could but there were just too many similarities. Besides those weird coincidences, Y/N also got random flashbacks of times with Gabriel, flashbacks that were too real to be only memories.
And the strangest thing that has happened to Y/N was the phone call she got yesterday.
The telephone rang, and Y/N ran down the stairs to answer it, thinking it might be Billy asking her to join him on some adventure.
“Hello?” Y/N answered when she lifted the handset. No one answered. The only thing Y/N could hear was static noise. “Hello?” she asked again, turning to check if anyone was in her home.
Again nothing. “Who is there?” she narrowed her brows in confusion, not exactly knowing what to do. Then a voice, far in the background almost not hearable. The voice muttered her name and Y/N’s eyes shot wide open.
“GABRIEL?!?” she yelled down the speaker and pressed it harder against her ear, thinking she would hear it louder.
The voice disappeared and then reappeared, muttering breathlessly,“...am down...side.” Y/N’s heart pounded like crazy and her hands started to shake. She swallowed hard and her brows knitted together in confusion once again.
“Gabriel....where are you?” she asked, trying to suppress the static noise and pay attention to the voice.
“down...side,” the voice said again before it disappeared and suddenly the loud beep of the phone blared through the speaker.
“Hello? Hello? Gabriel?” Y/N rapidly asked down the speaker, hoping for a reply but nothing. She groaned in frustration before hanging up the phone. She inhaled deeply, calming herself down before indulging in deep thought about what that all meant.
The next day Y/N decided to visit her school’s library and figure something out. Something must help her somehow. She strolled through the shelves of the library until she found something that sparked her interest.
She found a nice place for her to investigate and put the numerous books she had collected on the table. She opened the first one and started to read away. She also pulled out her notebook and decided to write down information she thought were of importance.
Suddenly a figure sitting down next to her interrupted her thought process. She quickly hid her scribbled down notes under a book and looked up to see Jonathan next to her. She let out a deep breath and rolled her eyes.
“You can’t scare me like that Jonathan!” she scolded and then got her notes back out to continue reading. He hummed in response causing Y/N to look back at him.
“What’s wrong? ”she asked, her brows raised in concern. He put his backpack down and scooted closer to Y/N looking over her book and notes, trying to figure out what was going on.
“Nothing. What are you reading?” he answered after a few moments as he scratched the nape of his neck. Y/N didn’t pay any more attention to his strange behavior but rather returned to her notes and her book.
“Jonathan,” she shifted in her seat and smiled at him with widened eyes. She inhaled, pausing for a moment and then continued.
“I know where G is...” she stated and watched him as he immediately rolled his eyes at her as she started talking about it again. They have had this conversation too many times for Jonathan to keep track. Besides, he grew tired of her thinking that her brother was calling her, screaming for help because he was stuck somewhere.
“Y/N,” he sighed, not knowing what else to tell her. She was so obsessed with the idea that her brother was still alive and well. Jonathan had tried so many times to avert her attention and make her think about something else than saving her brother from who-knows-where.
“No! listen to me, Jonathan. I told you that that fucking body, they showed me, was not my brother and you know that!” she scolded him quietly whispering her curse word. Jonathan inhaled deeply and let out a sigh before averting his gaze, looking out the window.
“You saw him at the funeral. Maybe, everyone else in this stupid shit town is dumb enough to fall for that stupid stupid fake dummy but... I am not. Okay? Now listen...” She tried to keep her voice as quiet as she could to not attract any more attention than what she was already getting.
Jonathan took a deep breath and waited for her to continue, looking at her with tired eyes.
“Look,” she opened her book to a page with an illustration of two spirals of lights next to each other. She took her pencil and pointed to the right one. “We are here,” she explained and then moved the pencil to the left one. “And Gabriel is here.”
Jonathan shook his head in disbelief, but still tried to understand where Y/N was coming from, “And how did he get there?”
“They took him there,” she whispered quietly leaning closer to him.
“Y/N I still don’t understand. You’re trying to tell me that Gabriel is in… another universe?” Jonathan tried to repeat what he had understood from her explanation. She nodded in response.
“And you’re saying …,” he leaned closer to her to minimize the gap between them. “And you’re saying that…the government took him there? I really don’t think that that makes any sense.”
“Not the government, Jonathan. But very influential people with a lot of money. And it doesn’t matter if it makes any sense we need to save Gabriel,” she explained further, thinking Jonathan would finally understand.
Instead, he shook his head again and bit down on his tongue trying not to ask why they would take Gabriel out of everyone because he knew that it would make her more upset than she already was.
He closed his eyes and inhaled, before asking, “And how do we do that Y/N?” He tried to stay as patient as he could.
Y/N grabbed another book that was next to her and skimmed through until she found a page titled “Portal.”
Jonathan took a deep breath and swallowed. He was over it; first Y/N thought she would hear Gabriel, then she thought he is in another universe and now she wanted to open a portal to visit the other universe?
“Okay no. You know what Y/N you’re delusional and…and out of your mind. Get up I’m driving your home.”
Y/N facial expression changed from confused to furious at his words. Her eyes widened in shock but she then quickly furrowed her eyebrows together.
“I am NOT delusional Jonathan!” she gritted through her teeth and clenched her jaw.
“You think that your brother was kidnapped. That there is a fake body buried 6 feet underground and that he is calling your name!” he counted on his fingers as he stood up.
“Shhh,” the librarian whispered as she passed the two of them, reminding them that they were still in the library.
Y/N’s eyes started to well up at his words, she collected her pens and paper, stuffing them into her bag. Without giving him another look she barged out of the library into the hallway of the school. Tears dripping down her face.
“Y/N wait. Listen!” Jonathan quickly followed behind her and called out her name: Y/N was quick on her feet and far down the hallway as she heard him yell her name. Her anger got the best of her and she quickly turned around, stomping up to where Jonathan had stopped.
“No! Jonathan. You listen! Out of all these people that look at me weird, that pout their lower lips out when they see me, that hug me tighter than before,” she paused before continuing.
“Out of all these people YOU…YOU are the one that is calling ME crazy. I am crazy. Yeah look at me I’m Y/N and I’m crazy because my brother is dead right?” she yelled back, looking up at him and gesturing wildly.
A few Students were watching the two of them and Y/N heard a few of them gasp as she spoke her last sentence.
“That’s not…”Jonathan stammered and stepped closer to her, but Y/N put her hand out stopping him to get any closer to her.
She squeezed her eyes shut and clenched her teeth before inhaling deeply and biting down on the inside of her cheek.
“Just….” she pressed her lips together and gestured for him to stay where he was. She turned around and started to walk away from Jonathan.
“Show’s over!! “she yelled over her shoulder, making the bystanders scurry away. The hallway emptied quickly, and Y/N had made her way over to the exit.
“You don’t have a ride home Y/N!” Jonathan called after her. At that moment she looked out the window of the door and saw Billy leaning on his car, smoking, in the parking lot.
“Yeah I do!” she called back without turning around and then opened the door.
“Y/N!” Jonathan shouted. “You know Gabriel only trusted me,” he added making her stop.
She took a deep breath but then decided not to argue with him any longer and quickly made her way over to Billy who welcomed her with his signature charming smile.
Billy held his arms open and Y/N snuggled into his chest, his scent indulging her. “You okay, princess?” Billy’s rough voice sounded over her head as his big hand pressed against her lower back. Y/N hummed in response, “Just... want to get away.”
“That I can do,” Billy responded and winked at Y/N once she had loosened her grip.
Billy reminded her of happiness and warmth while Jonathan was keen on reminding her that her brother wasn’t here anymore to keep her safe but somehow, she felt that safety with Billy.
Y/N opened the door and threw her bag inside before plopping down on the seat herself. Billy took the last drag of his cigarette before tossing it away and then mirrored Y/N and seated himself in the driver’s seat.
He turned the key in the ignition and started the engine before backing out of the parking lot. Y/N stared out of the window, watching Jonathan as he stood in the doorway locking eyes with her.
Y/N inhaled deeply through her nose with which she also got a whiff of the smell in Billy’s car. The car smelled of cigarettes and cologne. It smelled like Billy, it was different from Gabriel’s, Y/N thought but to be frank Y/N had already forgotten how Gabriel’s even smelled like.
Billy glanced over at Y/N and noticed her unusual behavior. She kept going over her fingers with her thumb, cracking them one by one. Her jaw clenched shut, making her jawline more prominent.
Billy cleared his throat before speaking, “Hey can I show you something?” His deep voice interrupted Y/N’s train of thought and she just hummed in response to which Billy suddenly took a left turn, away from the housing area up a separated country road.
Y/N didn’t pay much attention to where they were going. Her mind was racing, on the one hand with all the new information she had figured out and on the other hand, she was furious at Jonathan for calling her crazy.
Billy drove up a hill while Y/N looked out of the window, watching the trees as they got blurry. Music from the radio was playing softly in the background. Billy felt bad because of what happened with their ‘ice cream date’ so he decided that this was the best way to apologize for it.
The trees slowly disappeared and once they made it to the top of the hill Billy stopped the engine. He shifted in his seat and looked at Y/N offering her a small smile before opening his door and stepping outside.
Y/N mirrored him and stepped outside as she overlooked the whole sight and inhaled deeply.
“This is beautiful Billy!” she exclaimed happily. She was overlooking the whole city of Hawkins, Indiana, as she stood on top of the hill.
She gasped as she stepped closer to the edge of the hill and then turned to Billy who was watching her instead of the view, exhaling a cloud of smoke from between his lips. She scratched the side of her neck and mouthed a small “thank you,” offering him a grateful smile.
“Don’t mention it,” he muttered with his cigarette between his lips as he jumped on the hood of his car, scooching towards the windshield to lay his back against it. Y/N watched him as he readjusted himself and then motioned for her to come join him, making her giggle.
Y/N took her place next to him and stared at the sky, figuring out which shapes the clouds had in her mind.
"Let’s play a Game?" Y/N suggested, and Billy hummed in response taking another drag and puffing it into the air.
“But you have to answer honestly,” she added, pointing her finger at him warningly making him chuckle.
“Promise,” Billy’s husky voice chuckled at her seriousness and then put his arm behind his head as a prop to watch her.
Y/N looked back up at the sky before beginning.
“Okay...favorite color?” she began.
“Easy...Blue. Yours?”
“Uh...(y/fav/color)”
“Nice. My turn...” Billy said taking another drag, “Favorite food?”
“(Y/fav/food), yours?“
„Pizza. obviously.”
Y/N rolled her eyes at his response and playfully hit his chest.
“If it’s so easy then tell me your zodiac sign?” she asked, turning her head to catch his eyes.
He didn’t answer right away causing Y/N to snicker lightly, “Yeah that’s what I thought.”
“Geez Y/N who even takes that stuff seriously.”
His response caused Y/N to gasp dramatically, “I do Billy Hargrove!” She got up halfway and propped herself up on her elbow, turning her body into the same position he was in.
“Okay, okay. You tell me. My birthday is on August 17th,” he finally answered.
Y/N’s heart skipped a beat.
“Leo. You’re a Leo,” she answered Billy.
Her finger traced along the face of the lion that was crafted into the silver metal ring on her thumb. It belonged to Gabriel.
Gabriel wasn’t a Leo. He wasn’t even born in the summer. Yet, he was adventurous, loving and a free spirit but his favorite animal had always been the lion. When Y/N was little they used to play zoo together and Gabriel had always called dips on playing the lion, having perfected his roar over time.
Y/N smiled as she laid back down, going back to watching the sky. Silence fell over the two of them and only the inhaling and exhaling of Billy’s filled it.
“What are you thinking about?” he quietly asked after a few moments, tossing the stump of the cigarette away.
“My brother,” she answered silently.
“He died three months ago”
“I’m so sorry Y/N,” he murmured before he pulled her closer and put his arm around her, planting a kiss on the top of her head. She pressed her cheek into his chest and closed her eyes as a small tear rolled down her cheek.
