the twins had been about one months old, but if anything, joe felt as if evie needed to get out. the recent mom felt as if she was fine, drained and tired but happy. joe declined and suggested firmly they needed to get out. he had reserved a spot on the grouped hike. evie had been wanting to bring the twins, which joe was to disagree with, as it was their break from the crying babies. but he saw the look in her eyes and the ones in the small boy and girl, their eyes blue like their mother—then agreed. in the sunny noontime, evie saw joe in the black turtle neck and vest, the baby carrier around him and his baby girl asleep as they walked along the peaceful trail. she didn’t want a break, she didn’t need a break from the twins. she only needed her new family.
