Sonya and I have been dating for a year now, and I couldn’t be happier. She loves me better than anyone else ever has, she makes me happy.... truly happy. She’s the first relationship I’ve ever had with a girl, and she turned my world upside down in the best way possible. She has been out for some time now..... but not me. I’ve been hiding our relationship from my family. It’s our anniversary today and we’re going to dinner.
We’re both all dressed up and ready to go, Sonya in her suit and me in my fitted dress. “You look amazing baby!” Sonya says with a smile. “You look amazing too” I say admiring her beauty. I’ve already decided that after our dinner, I would call my parents and come out to them finally introducing Sonya as my girlfriend. I am terrified to tell them, I have no idea what they’ll say. In a perfect world, I would come out to them in person, but they live on the other side of the country.
“Are you ready baby?” Sonya asks me sweetly “Yeah, let’s go” I respond. Sonya and I hold hands the entire car ride, her in the drivers seat and me in the passenger seat. We arrive at the restaurant, Sonya walks over to my door, opening it for me and taking my hand to help me out. We sit at our table and enjoy our meal. She can tell something is off with me. “Oh nothing” I respond refusing to make eye contact with her. “You’re lying Y/N, what’s bothering you” she asks me. “I’m just feeling a bit sick is all” I say still refusing eye contact.
She doesn’t pressure me to talk about it more, and we finish our meal. I take a deep breath, the time is here. “Wait, baby I wanna call my parents” I struggle “I think I want to tell them something”. She looks up at me sort of in disbelief but with eyes full of love. “Y/N, you know you don’t have to do this right?” Sonya reassures me. “I know that you would never ask me to do it, but I don’t want to hide anymore. I don’t want to hide YOU anymore” I protest pulling out my phone to call my mother on facetime.
My heart is beating out of my chest, Sonya grabs my free hand to reassure me. My mom picks up the car “Oh my love bug, you look beautiful!” My mom says. “Oh is that Y/N?” My dad says coming closer “Hi honey you look wonderful!”. “Hi mom, Hi dad! So.... I called you to tell you guys something” I struggle as I try to find the words to say. “Ya pregnant?” My dad jokes. “No dad, I’m not” I say with a giggle.
“I wanted to tell you two that I’ve been seeing someone and today is our one year anniversary” I say building up courage. “Well let’s see the fine fella!” My mom says sporting a big grin. “I’m seeing a girl, mama” I say moving the camera to show both Sonya and I. Sonya shoots a smile and waves to my parents. “Oh Y/N you chose well, she is absolutely stunning” my mom says “Hi there gorgeous!”. “And she’s got good taste in fashion too, look at that suit!” My dad adds. “Thank you!” Sonya says cheerfully
“Well why did you wait so long to tell us love bug” my mom questions. “i just didn’t know how you would react” I sigh. There an awkward pause for a few moments “Who you love does not define how much or if dad and I love you. Our love for you is unconditional and as long as you are happy that is all we care about” My mom says to me. “Thank you” I say, tears forming in my eyes. “Now you two hurry up and come visit so we can go suit shopping” My dad teases.
