As the sticky, hot monsoon season draws to a close, South Korea’s famous Boryeong Mud Festival begins and ends in the final week of July. I was lucky to have gone twice to the festival, that is famed for it’s skin energising mud off the coast. Let’s take a look in pictures into just what makes this particular so popular among locals and tourists in Korea.
The Mud is actually situated in the Boryeong Mud Flats, which is situated a bit further away from the main beach. It is then hauled down by trucks to Daecheon Beach where the festival takes place. The whole area is set up with floats, mud wells and slides for visitors to enjoy and get dirty.
The Boryeong Mud
The Boryeong mud actually became popular in 1996, when a range of cosmetics were created in Korea to rejuvenate the skin. Since then the festival was created and has grown into international status that attracts millions of people each year.
The July season is hot, humid, rainy and sticky. The best things to do is cover yourself in mud, let it dry on your skin for about 20 minutes then wash it off in the ocean. Repeat this a few times and by the end of the week, you will see results. I can personally speak for the mud’s amazing benefits and results. I tend to have problem skin and prone to breakouts, and I can say my skin felt, and looked amazing for at least 3 months after my mud bath.
Daecheon Beach
Daecheon Beach is a rather nice beach. There are no big waves, and it very relaxing overall. It also has some great scenery and very safe. Be sure to catch the amazing fireworks display in the evening.
How to get there: The best way to get to Boryeong is by bus if you are travelling from Seoul. Otherwise there is a KTX to province of Chungnam, and from there take a bus to Daecheon Beach.
Muddy Mayhem
There are live shows and entertainment happening whole day. Last time I went there wasn’t much in the name of bars, however that could have changed since then. There has been a lot of negative talk about the festival as some revellers tend to get out of hand or drunk and this can ruin the fun for many.
However, the beach and pavilion is big. You can move around and decide what scene is more to your liking. Please note, that it is super crowded on the weekends. Many choose to go with groups made available on social media to arrange transport and accommodation as most places are booked out if you are planning to stay overnight. You can find many of these on Facebook or Meetup.com
Handy tip: Don’t bring your best bathing suit or beach wear. You will get muddy and dirty and most likely, get caught in the rain while you’re at it. So far, I’ve always thrown away the old clothes I’ve worn at this festival.
Why you should go
Besides the fact that is busy, it does have healing properties for the skin. It’s also a nice break away from the city. The festival is relatively inexpensive and the mud is totally free. There are other beaches to explore where it is less crowded and you can use the mud there, although I’m not to sure where they are.
It’s a great way to experience the raw natural ingredients of the Earth too, while having fun. Overall, it’s great vibe and you could even make a new friend!
The festival always runs in the last week of July.
