Teaser up unto the overturned keel, ch. 10: only the dead have seen the end of war

Upon their dismissal from the small council chambers after the queen’s unexpected testament reading, she had nigh demanded her daughter join her in her own solar for tea and sandwiches.

Rhaenyra may outrank her as Princess of Dragonstone, but her daughter was not foolish enough to deny her mother her company when it was near-ordered. First-in-line to the most powerful seat in the land she may be but that was nothing compared to a daughter’s love for her mother – and vice versa.

Now her beautiful daughter sat before her nibbling on a piece of buttery bread and salmon – her favourite. Yet, she did not seem to enjoy it, and instead seemed lost in her own mind. Inattentive to all but her own thoughts.

“Rhaenyra?” her daughter kept looking out of the window to the blue sky, turned away from her mother and the questioning gaze directed at her, “Daughter?” Her beloved girl kept her eyes away from her but had stopped her small nibbles.

“Rhaenyra, whatever it is, you can tell me, dear girl. Did your uncle hurt you?”

“No!” the princess turned to her with red-rimmed eyes, “Kepus would never hurt me!”

“Then why do you weep? Your eyes are filled with tears and his actions towards you do not inspire great confidence within me,” Aemma said, hoping to have her daughter open up to her.

“I…,” Rhaenyra seemed unable to give her an answer, “I can’t.”

Aemma stood from her chair and kneeled before her daughter, clasping the princess’ warm hands in hers. That was something Rhaenyra shared with Daemon and Rhaenys, they ran hot, which is something neither her nor Viserys ever did. The dowager queen thought it may be because they were dragonriders and she and her dead husband were not, “There is nothing in this world that you could not tell me, my love.”

“I killed her.”

Aemma was confused and that must have been clear to her daughter for she elaborated.

“The Queen. I killed her.”

Aemma was confused, so she croaked out a single word, “What?”

“I conspired with Ser Luthor to kill the queen. I had her poisoned and then I had him pull up a mirage and pretend she was felled by our foes,” it felt like all air had left Aemma's lungs, and yet her daughter did not cease her confession, “Daemon discovered our plot and he confronted me early this morn.”

Aemma did not know how to reply with anything but despair, “Why?”

That seemed to bring her downtrodden daughter back to life, “She was not worthy of him! Queen Alysanne forced him into that marriage! He never wanted her and yet no one aided him or stopped her in selling her own grandson as if he was a prized colt,” Rhaenyra sneered when she spoke of her great-grandmother, much like Daemon did when he spoke of the Conciliator’s sister-wife.

“Rhaenyra…”

“I thought with the queen gone, he might…,” Rhaenyra averted her eyes and almost seemed bashful and embarrassed with her own confession.

“He might what, Rhaenyra?” though Aemma knew exactly what it was her daughter seemed to want from her uncle, she still needed her to speak her truth.

“I thought he might wed me,” the truth of it all had come to light.

Her daughter had ordered the queen killed. Her beautiful baby had the blood of an innocent woman on her hands. No one could ever know, Aemma knew. Scores of lords around the realm would demand Rhaenyra’s head for treason and war would break out as Daemon would bathe the realm in fire and blood to defend her daughter, she knew. All would be destroyed in her good-brother’s fury, of that she had no doubt. Even angered at his heir’s presumptuous actions, he would defend her with all he had and kill any and all.

Aemma had accused Daemon of murdering his queen and now that she knew it was her own daughter who had caused the woman’s death, she had no clue on how to deal with it. The dowager queen had almost thought she was above Viserys’ tendency to think the worst of the man once known as the Rogue Prince, but it seemed she was no better and instead had reverted to her late lord husband’s ‘blame Daemon strategy’.

When was it that Aemma had lost sight of who her daughter was? Was it when her king died? Somewhere along the way Rhaenyra had become someone she did not know.

Daemon had taken over all decisions regarding her education and as such she had little knowledge of what Rhaenyra did during her days, besides that little that the princess shared with her. From the moment Rhaenyra had been confirmed as Princess of Dragonstone, her studies were overseen by the King, the Hand and Maester Gerardys.

Her daughter learned her numbers at the hand of the Lords Beesbury and Celtigar, while Lyonel saw to her knowledge of the laws. The Lord Commander had been training her in the ways of combat and warfare, and even Rhaenys had taken a place at Rhaenyra’s side teaching her the ways of Old Valyria, as well as politics, statecraft and trade.

Yet, it was what her daughter did in the king’s chambers that had been most secretive of all. Aemma had inquired a few times about what Daemon and her did during their private lessons but Rhaenyra had always been effusive in her answers. Until now, she had never worried about what took place in the royal apartments, but if her daughter had thought it necessary to revert to such actions in the hopes of gaining Daemon’s public affection she dreaded what had forced Rhaenyra’s hand.

“Your uncle…,” Aemma tried to broach the uncomfortable subject, “… what happened during your lessons? Does he ever touch you? Is that why you…?”

Her daughter snorted even whilst the salty tears still streamed over her rosy cheeks, “Touch me? He would never allow himself such liberties.”

“Then why would you?” Aemma could not understand why her innocent girl could ever do such a monstrous thing if not pushed to do so by the uncle she nigh-worshipped as an Eastern deity.

“Because we are dragons,” the girl shrugged her shoulders at her, clearly not seeing any issue with her wants.

“Rhea was innocent. She had no hand in what–”

“She chose to bound herself to a dragon in chains,” Rhaenyra sneered at her, “Rhea knew that Daemon had no wish to be wed to her, but yet she still took her vows with Alysanne standing before her speaking for him.”

“That is the way of things, daughter. Women must do their duty, as do men! It is not because Daemon held ill will towards her for no other reason than he thought her beneath him, that she deserved to die!”

“It is not our way of things! We are dragons!”

Aemma stood from where she had been kneeled at her daughter’s feet, unable to grasp just how deep her daughter had fallen, “Do you have no remorse, Rhaenyra? My niece grieves for her sister. As does Lady Marla. Her remaining kin will no doubt be shattered from the revelation of their liege’s death. Runestone has been taken from the Vale because of the decisions you made.”

“A dragon has no thought for the sheep she feasts upon.”
