Hi folks, so this is something slightly different to our usual style but honestly my mind is not into writing a whole fic at the moment - not even oneshots. BUT I wanted to produce SOMETHING for @kbweek2020.
So we came up with this instead. (Under a cut bc it is a bit long)
Summary: In a Dalton AU where Kurt and Sebastian are (reluctant) roommates, Kurt gets some bad news. Sebastian tries to comfort him in his uniquely unhelpful way.
AN: A day late because yesterday was a shit show in the offline world, but we really liked this prompt and wanted to fill it. We hope you like it.
This is my contribution to the Free Kurt week set up by @elledelajoie, thank you for setting it up :) and thank you to @jwmelmoth for the beta.

Summary: Sometimes even the best players need a Get Out of Jail Free card.

Finn pulled up in front of his parent's house and quickly shut off the engine. Burt's truck was missing and Finn felt his heart plummet at the sight. Either he was early and everything would be okay, or; Burt and Kurt had already left and Finn was too late.
He put the hand brake on, took the keys from the ignition and threw himself out of the car. He crossed the front lawn in three strides (not for the first time thanking Grilled Cheesus for giving him long legs) and slammed the front door open.
"Kurt?" He yelled as soon as he was over the threshold, slamming the door shut so that the glass shook a little. "KURT?"
He heard movement upstairs and ran for it, taking the stairs three at a time and barrelling down the hall into Kurt's room.
Kurt stood in the middle of his room in front of the full length mirror, examining himself. He gave a start at the abrupt arrival of his brother.
"Finn?" he admonished. "What have I told you about jumping out at people, you could have given me a heart attack!"
"Sorry dude," Finn replied. "I'm so glad you're still here, I thought Burt might have picked you up for the airport already."
Kurt looked at him and raised his eyebrow. "I think we both know dad isn't taking me to the airport today, Finn...otherwise you wouldn't have so elegantly crashed your way through the house."
Finn bit his lip. "You heard that?"
"Blaine is going to propose," Kurt said matter of factly, ignoring the comment.
"Yeah," Finn said awkwardly. "He gathered us all in the choir room just now to tell us...but how do you know?"
Kurt snorted. "Please, he's not exactly the cast of Pretty Little Liars. Blaine can't keep a secret to save his life." He turned back to examine his reflection and smoothed his hands down the front of his turquoise suit jacket. "So, are you my dad's replacement to drive me? I assume we're going to Dalton?"
"No dude," Finn said seriously. "I'm here as your get out of jail free card!"
Kurt stopped tweaking his hair and looked at him.
"What?"
"Dude, you can't marry this guy, you know that, right?? He's not good for you."
Kurt narrowed his eyes. "I dunno, everyone else seems to think he's as good as it's ever going to get for me, why shouldn't I believe them over you?"
"Because I remember what it did to you the last time he let you down. I was there in New York, remember? You said you felt ‘like you were going to die'. I can't sit by and watch you get set up for more heartache, and you know that it's going to happen again. He didn't last two weeks the last time you left for New York, do you really think that'll be different this time just because he's put a ring on it?"
He watched as Kurt mulled over his words. He knew he was being blunt but they were running out of time and he had to make Kurt see.
"You're my brother, Kurt. It may have taken us a while to get here, but you're my brother and I love you. I can't let you go through with this!"
"What about what I want, Finn? Why does no one ever think about what I might want?" Kurt argued back.
"We do!" Finn let out.
"Oh really? Because it doesn't feel like it! Blaine's proposing because it's what he wants, you're telling me not to say yes because it's what you want...but what about me? Do I even get a say in this?"
"Well, what do you want?" Finn crossed his arms over his chest and looked at his brother. He watched as Kurt's eyes went wide and his mouth dropped open.
"I-" he stammered. "I don't know...I don't know, okay?" Kurt cried. "I want Blaine to never have cheated. I want to have moved to New York last summer with Rachel as planned whilst everything was great and amazing and for Blaine to join me in the city this summer once he graduates."
Finn nodded but remained silent.
"I want to have not slept with him on Valentines Day and to have not fucked up the thing I had with Adam because of him."
Finn raised his eyebrows a little at that. He hadn't realised Kurt and Blaine slept together that night...apparently it had been a night of mistakes for both Hudmel brothers.
"I want for people to be on my side for a change instead of always gravitating towards him! People did it when we were still in school and now, when all of this is going down, the fact that you're the only person who is here giving me an out is really spelling out that everyone else thinks I should say yes."
"Do you want to say yes?"
"I-" Kurt hesitated. "He says he loves me."
"That's not what I asked," Finn said, stepping towards him. "Do you want to be with him? Do you want to marry him?"
"No," Kurt whispered.
"Alright then, grab your stuff and I'll take you to the airport. Though," His eyes swept over his brother's outfit. "Are you sure you wanna wear that on a plane?"
Kurt looked down at his suit and laughed a little. "No, I guess not."
"What time is your flight?"
"Two."
"Okay, so I'd say we have about half an hour before we have to leave. Get changed and I'll help you deal with dad when he gets home."
He smiled at Kurt and was happy when it was returned.
"Thanks Finn," Kurt said a little watery, stepping forward to hug him. Finn wrapped his arms around him and hugged him tight.

A Drop in the Ocean - An unofficial fan-sequel of A Change in the Weather (2012) by cacophonylights
Follow us for the countdown! First preview tonight.
In school, it had felt like he was the only one who struggled with finding his place in the world as a gay person. There was Blaine, who was confident but out in a muted, under-the-radar way, often making people forget about his sexuality when they talked, and then there was Sebastian, outspoken and in-your-face, never letting anyone forget that he was having all the gay sex, and enjoying it. It had felt those were the only two options out there, and that Kurt was doing it wrong by not being sure in which direction he was heading.
As he picks up the lid to close the box, he notices an envelope slid between the cardboard edge on the inside. It is addressed to Sebastian, dated December 2010, at an address in Paris, France.
Without opening it, Kurt knows this is not like the postcards. The letter has a weight to it, and the fact that it’s here, brought back home from Paris to be saved with the cards Sebastian had collected in Ohio, it has to mean something. Can he read this, too? Postcards are unsealed, open to anyone, even the mailman can read them. But an actual letter…that’s sealed and private. Just like a phone chat log, a small, curious voice inside his head reminds him. Moral, unmoral. Right, wrong- is it revenge or simply curiosity?
With shaking hands and against his better judgement, Kurt opens the envelope and begins to read.
- A Drop In The Ocean by @jwmelmoth and daftydraw. Coming July 4th
I've read a lot of yours and jwmelmoth's stuff and I'm sorry. I don't think the way you guys write Bas fits the ACITW universe. And I know other readers who feel the same way. I just don't see your continuation being a good fit. Why not write something original? That's what you guys are good at.
We can understand why some people might be a little confused - the versions of Sebastian that we’ve written in the past have been different from ACITW’s Sebastian…but guess what? That was because we weren’t trying to write ACITW Sebastian.
Glad You Came / Glad You Stayed Bas is a COMPLETELY different character; for one, he’s years older, has a different past, a different family. We even made him grow up in a different country! Canon Glee gives us almost 0 information about the character Sebastian Smythe, which means his whole background is up for interpretation. It’s a fanfiction author’s goldmine.
Rest assured that A Drop in the Ocean will not be featuring our GUC universe character. It will however have our interpretation of ACITW Sebastian, just as any ACITW-universe fic that is not written by Cacophonylights herself features an interpretation of the characters.
If you believe we will not do a good job at that, you are welcome to give our fic a pass - or maybe just try the first few chapters and see what you think?
We kindly ask you to let every reader make up their own mind.
We’re not forcing anyone to read it, but a LOT of people have expressed their excitement and interest in reading our version, and we will be sharing it regardless of whether we lose you as our reader or not.
“Sebastian said it was your suggestion for us to come to the beach house,” Kurt starts slowly.
Julian waits a moment, then replies. “Yes?” He sounds like he is trying to gauge whether he is in trouble or not. At another time, it would have pleased Kurt more to have the upper hand in the conversation with the older Smythe brother like this, but not today. Kurt only watches him squirm for a moment, then lets him off the hook.
“I can’t even begin to tell you how right that has been for us. Spending time here alone with Sebastian, without distractions or anyone expecting us to behave a certain way-”
Julian breathes out in relief. “Like as if you’ve been dating for months?” he asks quietly, shooting a glance over his shoulder at the terrace door. They are alone, and Kurt nods.
“We’ve had time to talk, maybe not about all of it yet, but…it has been good so far, and we have you to thank for it.”
“I’m glad,” Julian says, his voice a little troubled. “After everything that has happened between me and Seb, to be able to help him instead of-”
“I know what you did, Julian,” Kurt cuts him off.
